Coming back to the game advice!
If you haven’t playing since launch, my advice would be to leave the L80 Boost and level one or two character up naturally. The game has changed, and you would not miss the tutorial tips and level-up rewards doing so.
Welcome return, and good luck.
If you haven’t played at all and boost an ele to 80 and go to HoT maps you will die. A lot. Dark Souls.
Most people here are going to recommend that you level a toon naturally to get back into the swing of things. It’s really worth doing as much has changed since launch.
The boost doesn’t expire, so there’s no harm in hanging onto it. Alternatively, if you decide to take the boost, it will give you max level gear and a testing period in the Silverwastes— which is easier than the HoT maps. So, feel free to test on any character and see how you’ll do without knowing the game. The benefit here is that if you decide the boosted character isn’t fun or that you aren’t ready, you can try it on another one or save it while longer.
To answer the “which class” portion of your question, it all depends upon your play style and what you’ll enjoy. There’s a pretty good rundown on each class here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1ojgdr/what_class_should_i_play_a_summary_of_each/
Never use the boost permanently. Use it to try out different characters at max level, and to check out different race/profession combos, as the feel of them will differ by race. I went through 3 mesmers before I got the right race for mine that I liked working with. But yeah, seriously just level the class normally. It doesn’t take that long and you will understand the class much better that way.
Is there an explanation of how to use the boost temporarily?
When you use the boost, it will put you in Silverwastes with whatever character you pick. At this point you have not used it up. If I remember correctly you have to intentionally talk to a guy in the camp who will make the boost permanent. Until you do that you can run around in SW with that character, or leave and boost something else and run around with that to try it out. You can’t leave SW, and I forget how loot is handled, but either way, the game should make it very clear when you are about to use the boost up.
I agree that it’s best to level at least 1 character naturally before using the boost because you’ll learn a lot about the game that way.
When you do come to use it there’s 2 totally different ways I think you could use it well:
1) Boost a profession you really enjoy playing, so you’ve got 2 options for level 80 content.
2) Boost a profession you don’t enjoy playing in open-world PvE (which is the majority of levelling content) but would find useful for some level 80 stuff, like raids or Fractals or maybe WvW.
I suspect most people go with option 1. There is no ‘best’ profession, it depends on what you enjoy playing and what you want to do. I went with option 2, because I wanted one of each profession at level 80 but I find Warriors boring to play so it was unlikely I’d ever finish levelling one.
It is also possible to use the boost on a character who is already level 80, which obviously doesn’t level them up but does give all the items and equipment, so if you decide you just want to get rid of it you have that option.
Here’s a few other things which may be helpful to know:
- In PvP all characters are always level 80 with all skills and traits unlocked and your equipment does not affect your stats, therefore there is no need to boost a character for PvP.
- Although you cannot get another Level 80 Boost you can get Tomes of Knowledge from various places (in particular login rewards, PvP and WvW) which award 1 level each, so you can level additional characters without playing them if you want to. (I like to keep at least 80 Tomes just in case I want another level 80 at short notice.)
- You don’t get XP from PvP and WvW but you do get tomes so you can level a character by playing those modes if you want to.
