Hello all, I am a bit confused about this game after watching videos and trying it myself

Leveling is confusing are the heart quest better to do or just kill creatures, bandits est?

The stuff you get from the heart quest what is it used for?

At what level does armor look different ? and When can you dye and customize it?

Heart quests and dynamic events are your best bet to level. Also crafting but that might be a bit expensive. Also dont forget to gather everything you see, they provide good exp as well. You just get a bit of coin completing the heart quests, but the point is it provides you a guide on where to proceed, the telescope npcs also are great to provide a preview of the area. Armors all look diff generally, and you can customize your color anytime under H, you can see an eyedropper button there.

The heart quests have a variety of things you can do for them, some of which are kill certain types of mobs nearby. The reward you get for completing hearts is a small amount of money, starting around 40c and growing to around 4s. If you can complete and entire map area, you will get two pieces of gear, a stack of crafting materials, and a random BLTC Gem item (like a Black Lion Key or Transmutation Stones).
Armor slowly changes in appearance as you go through the game, though occasionally you can come across similar sets of armor. Dying armor can be done the moment you step into the world by opening up the Hero Panel (H) and clicking the little eye dropper above your armor. Customizing it can also occur pretty early as well, all it needs is a piece of equipment and a gem, rune, sigil, or talisman.

Generally the xp you get from killing mobs is the slowest for leveling.

Best xp comes from dynamic events.

Personally I find the renown hearts tiresome, but you have to do them to get zone-completion, and they’re not bad, they just are so formulaic and feel like chores.

re: gear appearance -
some of the most distinctive looking gear will come from rewards for your personal story. If the stats on the gear don’t appeal to you, you can use a transmutation stone (which you’ll get for zone-completions) to merge the looks, the stats and the rune/sigil of two items of the same type.

The stuff you get from the heart quest what is it used for?

Completing Event’s Gives you Karma, that’s the currency with the little Triangle. Karma can be spent at Karma vendors to buy all sorts of things. After Finishing a Heart the quest giver becomes a Karma Vendor and usually sells several items which might be:
*Gear (Weapons, armor, Jewelry)
*Recipies (For your Crfting)
*Food and ingredients (some Food can only be bought from Karma Vendors)
*Vanity items and Nick-knacks (This is the stuff you buy thats not very useful, but might be fun. Such as potions that turn you Orange or one-shot weapons)

Heart Vendors are a good way to keep your gear up to date, I always check what the vendor has to offer.

if you’ve played mmos before and are tempted to do the same grind: don’t ;-) leveling works best if you don’t think about it and just play to have fun. do heart quests, dynamic events, gather stuff, explore as has been said above. nearly everything gives xp and you’ll level up without having to think about it.
if you are underlevelled however, which usually happens after a while in your starting area – check out the other lvl 1-15 regions. don’t try to gain the necessary levels to proceed by doing the same monsters forever. just go to another region and explore there. you don’t have to visit any area multiple times to level up (but if you like the events, you can ofc). just go everywhere once and by completing the map you will hit 80

disclaimer: I know one can optimize the amount of exp received by constantly thinking about it and planning everything. some people might even like this kind of gameplay. but as lvl 80 doesn’t take that long anyway, I recommend having fun instead of calculating maximum exp gain.

Also, there is no big hurry to get to 80. Nothing dramatic happens at 80. (Well, you get to go kill a big dragon, of course.) There is a much more dramatic change at level 30 than at level 80: first dungeon, Ascalon Catacombs, opens for you.

Personal story gives quite a bit of XP among other tangible goods, but it is also rather fun (mostly) and you’ll need it to get to go kill the big dragon at 80. Some of the tasks are rather challenging, but you can take a friend or friends with you to help out.

Nope you don’t have to kill enemy’s over and over again to be able to level. Thats a different game. In this game almost evrything counts as experience.
- playing and specially winning in sPvP
- playing and specially winning in WvW
- Crafting
- Gathering materials for crafting
- killing enemy’s
- doing dynamic events
- doing the renown hearts
- finding undiscovered waypoints
- finding undiscovered points of interest
- playing video’s when you discover a new Vista
- finishing jumping puzzles.
- doing your personal story
- doing dungeons
- reaching achievements like 100% completion of a certain map or getting your daily achievements to the max

(might have forgotten a thing or two)

So best way to level is do all of the above, kill enemy’s while filling in the heart, do all dynamic events you encounter, get all waypoints, vista’s and points of interest, if you see a gathering node use your gathering tools to gather materials (also good to do crafting that also gives experience or to sell for some money).

In other words, just play the game. As being said, being high level does give you some advantages like access to better stats on armor and weapons. But when returning to a low level area you will be downscaled making this advantage much smaller then in most MMO’s.. For example, in Queensdale (human starter area) a level 80 get all his stats (health, power, armor level, etc) reduced with 90%. The only advantage he has is that he had found a better combination of armor and weapon and upgrades and has all his skills unlocked

If by ‘stuff you get from the heart quest’ you mean the items sold by the quest givers for karma then it varies. Sometimes it’s weapons or armor, sometimes it’s consumables that give you short-term stat boosts, sometimes it’s crafting materials or recipes. There’s a lot of different things and they all have different uses.

Armor doesn’t strictly change with level. There are many different armor sets with different appearances and you need to find them as drops or craft them or buy them from vendors and other players. More sets become available as you level up but from what I’ve seen you get a decent variety just from drops.
