Considering coming back
1. I don’t have thief i can’t answer your question.
2. Good like it’s alway been, more newbie friendly.
3. For story line, cosmetic prob you missed out a ton, but for gears and stuff like that it’s much more easier to get for newbie, gw2 is a skill based game.
4. Yes you will kill yourself if jump right into expansion without any preparation.
5. Start with another class, thief is not a newbie friendly class imo, guardian, revenant, ranger, warrior are easy to play and very strong in expansion zones, if you heard something bad about class just ignore it, prob a bunch of whining kid. Some other class also strong with elite specs are necro and engineer. Get a class to 80.
6. Not so bad some elite specializations worth it but some still need a fix from anet,
masteries is grindy but not a problem just don’t rush the game.

I haven’t played my thief in a loooong time, so can’t answer that.
How’s the game now? I’m loving it. I left a few months ago for FFXIV, and the expansion brought me back.
Just how much have I missed out on? Not sure how much you missed out on, guess that would depend where you left off.
Would jumping straight into the expansion be shooting myself in the foot? I don’t think so. I jumped right in after being gone awhile, it was a crash course relearning my class though. I have rare armor purchased from the TP. Nothing fancy or crafted. Granted, some mobs do hurt. I only pve, so can’t speak on other aspects of the game.
Where would be the best place to start? Relearn your class. Either in the pvp lobby or running other areas in Tyria. Then continue the story.
How’s the expansion? I love the expansion. The new areas are gorgeous. Gliding is super fun. The events are fun. I haven’t gotten an elite specialization yet, I’ve been distracted with getting the new Ranger pets, and lost in the jungles. Masteries are a grind though.
