I just wanted to ask a question , I know that there had been some kind of exploits in the past involving karma, so I need to make sure I am not breaking any rules.

So, if I can turn any ammount of karma into coins , is this an exploit?Converting one currency into an other is an exploit?Nothing game breaking, lets say small ammounts and I will give examples.

I am usually using my karma to buy Green items(900-1000 karma each) to put them into the mystic forge with the possibility of getting a Rare and salvaging it for ectoplasms, I don’t really care about any piece of armor that is sold for karma, so pretty much I don’t want to use it there, I can still use it to buy these green stuff and have a X chance of getting some ecto out of some thousands of karma spend, is this an exploit?

The other day we did some runs on explorable dungeons and I got the dungeon tokens(an other form of currency) but still I am not intrested(yet) on any of the dungeon pieces of armor/weapon, so I spend them to buy the items and salvage them for ectos, is this a form of exploiting?

TL:DR If I can turn one currency to an other, without making HUGE proffit out of it, is it still an exploit?

Using currency to buy items you salvage shouldn’t be an exploit… if it is then my opinoin of Anet sinks a little because Karma is so useless for some of us that I’ve been meaning to get around to just that.

You can use karma to get a lot of unique weapons and armors (rare and exotics) that you cant get by any other means.

Run around the world and explore I am sure you will find them.

Some quotes by Anet personel to start with :
‘The players we banned were certainly intentionally and repeatedly exploiting a bug in the game’
‘If you discover an emergency game-breaking or economy-breaking bug, do not exploit it, but please notify us immediately at this email address: exploits (at) arena (dot) net.’

So, reading the above, you should ask yourself if you are using an advantage that is unfair to people who are not using it. Though this can’t be answered directly I think you should be able to answer it yourself. However when in doubt, don’t do it, but sent an email to to above emailadress and ask them directly.

The problem is that your asking in the players helping players section and no matter what we say will give you the conformation your seeking cause it is Anets judgement that counts. So ask them and do not put attention to possible exploits here.

In the long run I would guess however it is ok.

I feel safe in saying there is nothing wrong with what you are doing.

If you were buying high level items for a measly 21 karma then it would be an obvious exploit and you would get banned (as many players found out). But you aren’t doing that.

Basically you get somewhere between 300-400 karma per event. So you have to do 3 events to get 1 item. Seems fine to me, you have to put in the effort to get the reward.

It is only an exploit if the karma item you are buying is not sold at the correct amount of karma points or when you combine the karma green items you automatically get a rare every time or that rare salvages in to 3 ectos every time and you continue to exploit these bugged mechanics. If something is not working to what is normal and you continue to exploit it, you should be worried. If you are buying everything at what it is suppose to be and works out how its suppose to be, its fine.

The issue with the big karma ban, was it was one item that was priced insanely discounted due to an error. What you are doing is using your tokens to convert to an item (by design), then choosing to salvage that item, instead of use it. Basic game mechanics, and outside of finding some glitch to get tokens without doing dungeons, or manipulating the price or game mechanics in some form or fashion, everything you are doing is as designed…

Thank you everyone for your answers,I suppose it makes sense.
I am not gonna use or advertise any exploits (even if I find one) because I don’t want to get banned for a few gold

An exploit is when you use a bug (or a game mechanic in a way that was not intended) to achieve an end that is not intended, especially when it circumvents other mechanics intended to prevent that end.

The people that were banned were banned for buying absurd amounts (hundreds or thousands) of an item that was obviously under priced. It was way out of line (a high level item selling for essentially an entry level item price), and they knew it was way under priced. By exploiting the bug in the price, they were able to use intended game mechanics to make way more money off that item than they could have off of a correctly priced item. Thus, they used a bug to achieve an unintended result.

Thus, while the fact that they made gold off of it was an issue, it wasn’t the fact that they made gold off of it. It was the amount of gold they were able to make off of it compared to the amount of Karma they had to spend to do so.
