What are these crafting backpacks actually used for, or of what good are they? I have read the text that goes along with one, but it makes for a pretty vague description of their main usage.

First of all they are decorative.
Second they are the backpiece that is the easiest to get and most ppl use it to tie them over until they have the time and resources for an ascended one.
Also they have an infusion slot so they help you get started in the Fractals of the Mists

Or did I get you wrong?

They are the easiest back item to get that has an infusion slot. There are other back items you can just buy from TP or with karma.

A bit odd really. I expected it to be for crafting in the field or something, but thanks for the enlightenment.

While flavor wise they are designed to look like that, afaik there is no way of carrying around a crafting station (unless I missed it in the Gem Store).

When they were added, there were practically no backslot items for below lvl 80.

I think there’s still almost no others, come to think of it…

So, they’re just themed, that’s all
