Hey folks,

I have a 400 skill armoursmith and weaponsmith and lately have been farming materials or buying from the trade post in order to create items to sell.

What I have noticed though with greater frequency is people selling exotic level 80 items for far less than they actually cost to create. In most cases at a significant loss.

That to me just seems silly. I hope it won’t be the norm and just a consequence of people not understand the economics of the game.

What does it cost to create draconic armor? I see people selling that at about 3 gold a piece and I’m tempted to buy it.

level 80 rare gear just costs about 2/3 G at a vendor so going higher than that doesn’t make much sense. And the Tp is being flooded at the moment because it was out so long, by the time it levels out prices will go a little higher.

What are the costs of smithing a good weapon by the way? And the costs of crafting aren’t that high when you go around gathering/salvaging everything, do you buy it at the TP?

In GW2 it really never hurts to help! Carebear paradise!

To create a level 80 exotic greatsword requires

5 glob of ecto @ 19.5s each
5 vial of powerful blood @18s each
44 orichalcum ore @ 3.5s each
20 ancient wood log @ 1s each

That’s 3g 61s 5c. Factor in the 5% listing fee and 10% final sale fee, if you want to make a profit, lets say 25% you would need to sell that item for a minimum of 5g 6s 1c.

But people are listing them for as little as 3g 40s which when you take into account the fee’s are basically a huge loss. If you farmed those materials yourself, you’d still be making a loss creating items because you could get more selling them separately.

Exotic gear is worth it in the long run though as its a net 13% stat boost which can make all the difference, specially in explorable mode dungeons and wvw.

The problem right now is you cant sell crafted gear for any profit due to the fact it is litterally only a few points better than just normal old blue and green drops. As such this keeps them at vender trash prices while the mats needed to make them are anything but. If the mats followed the same trend the gear does then crafters would be in a much better spot. But when you buy mats and are lucky to get half the cost back from the final product theres just no room for crafters. Hopefully something will change in the market but it will pribally take a market reset or a really long time before such happens.

People are getting exotics from map completion and drops and such, so they price to sell without thought to what the item would cost to make.

I had done the math too and also came to the conclusion that crafting exotics for the purpose of making profit is a waste of time.

Even boxes of all sizes are going for a net loss…

Most people are not aware of additional 10% sales fee that is not advertised anywhere, it can only be seen once you sell an item and you get (guess how much) 10% less.

Yes. I think most people are not aware of the fee. There is the minimum price = vendor price. The price you sell it to an npc vender. And some have just this or 1 copper higher for the low price stuff. With the fee substracted they will have even lower profit than selling to npc vendor then.

Also the prices for raw materials are not sure. You are just taking the prices from the broker. But they could calculate(yeah I know its wrong and they could just sell the raw at the lowest seller price in broker for more profit then but not everyone is thinking that much) with the npc vendor selling price and try to make it a bit more expensive but still cheaper than others.

And maybe people create stuff just to discover the repices because they want everything in the list unlocked and then want to get rid of it fast.

The stat difference between blue, green and yellow are fairly significant, your easily looking at double if not more going from blue to exotic.

i don’t think people are selling cheep just to empty their bags.
i opted in crafting and selling bags.
15 slot leather bag you can craft for 51.4s (50s for rune and 1.4s for leather)
you can make a profit if you sell it for 60.5 or more
and now a big hairy but
http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/9418
if you look at the market people are constantly losing money
and this goes for all 15 slot bags cloth leather and metal

Fine 80 Beserker’s Greatsword – Weapon Strength : 759-839, +135 Power, +97 Precision, +7% Critical Damage
Masterwork 80 Berserker’s Mithril Greatsword – Weapon Strength : 819-906, +147 Power, +105 Precision, +8% Critical Damage
Rare Berserker’s Krait Slayer – Weapon Strength : 882-975, +158 Power, +113 Precision, +8% Critical Damage
Exotic Berserker’s Pearl Broadsword – Weapon Strength : 995-1100, +179 Power, +128 Precision, +9% Critical Damage

Ok going to go ahead and apologize here for those breakdowns. Just to show something here. Weapons have one of the largest differences between the different levels of any items in the game. Two-handed ones like this greatsword even more so than others. This being said. Till you get to exotic theres really very little change, (Referring in comparison to what you would see in other games). Infact if we take the exotic out the biggest jump comes from fine to masterwork in terms of total gain. Now Looking at the exotic the stat increase from fine. Weapon Power : 23.73%, Power : 24.59%, Precision :24.22%, Critical Damage : 22.23%. Now that all said and down is on fine to exotic. Not even a 25% increase. My guess as its to late to go threw each and every piece of gear my guess is that the ’s will be simular. So over all at best you might see 25 boost from what most would use as there worst set to there best set. In the world of mmorpg’s thats nothing as a lot of games i have seen litterally do more than double between the different levels of gear.

Had some thoughts on making crafting worth it.

Decrease maximum durability over time. Have NPC’s sell less than maximum durability goods. Have repairs consume one of the lowest priced material that went into crafting an item. This effects the crafted item price ensuring a premium for freshly crafted goods and tying the crafted price to the material price.

A very small population of players are level 80 at this point, believe it or not. Once players get there, you can guarantee that the demand for those items will go up. Just start stocking up on crafted items in the meantime, and perhaps even buy out other people’s cheap gear to resell for profit come a few weeks time

Maybe it is just because everyone can farm the stuff that easily? I mean this is not like other MMORPGs where you have to go 100 times in one dungeon to get on item. Then doing this a few hundred times until you have a full set and then being able to go into the next dungeon and get the next set.

Crafted items seem interesting but probably a lot of people just want to farm the stuff for themselves(because it is not that hard to do it) and not willing to pay that much and that’s why the prices are low?

Actually, you can. I’ve made several gold off of crafting level 35 rare weapons and selling them on the Trading Post, originally for 50s a pop. Now, however, the price of the blood vials have increased and the price their selling for is drastically lower, there’s still a bit of profit but not much. I’m looking for another means of using my profession skills now.

Still, I’ve gotten to 16g primarily just because of the initial boon of making rare weapons for the trading post. I could probably find another market where costs of mats on TP are lower than the going price and sell, but the level 50 rares take forever to sell, higher probably won’t do much good either.

at level 400 jewler i’m able to either;

a) buy mats to make my jewel, list the item in the tp for profit
b) offer my crafting services for 20s per item crafted

there’s no doubt in my mind that the other professions can do the same

Not true. I went in to the Trading Post yesterday, thinking I might try and sell some items and noticed it in the trading pane. I decided not to sell anything because of what other people were getting for the same weapons because the prices were low.

As most long term MMO gamers will tell you. Crafting for profit is rare. There are a few ways you can make money.

1) Get your skill highest first and sell high before anyone else comes to flood the market.
2) Produce consumable items that persistently need to be used. Runes/Sigils/Potions…
3) Produce rare commodity goods that only you the crafter can get the material to get at high level because you can do content they can’t.(promoted as raid mat’s like the motor bike from WoW)

The problem with most MMO crafting is that the system encourages market flooding. Everyone wants a higher skill and the only way to do that is to create many items. Since everyone with the same skill is creating dozens of every item the market floods. Theres more items than there are purchasers at any given time. So to encourage sales crafters lower their price on the TP/AH to try and re-compensate loss.

I don’t need no stinking signature.

Just some thoughts.

As a long term MMO gamer, crafting for profit is half the fun. I didn’t always make profit, but more often than not.

Everyone wants the higher skill but they won’t all attain it instantly. If you have more dedication to the craft you should have a higher skill and produce better items.

Mats need to be somewhat rare for a given level. Consuming a mat for repair is still a great way to do this.

I remember risking life and limb to sneak into the next higher level area to pick high level flowers. I was rewarded by having relatively high level potions to sell.

Maybe introduce a crafting professional option where you make better items in exchange for a long term combat nerf. This would make crafting great items something you were devoted to.
