Guild Wars 2

So I’m currently a level 31 Sylvari Mesmer, and right now I’m trying (and failing horribly) to do the personal storyline mission “Dead of Winter”. I use a Greatsword with Dual Swords on backup. The mission progresses smoothly until I reach a stumbling block of epic proportions – the battle around halfway through the crypt where I’m confronted with a Veteran Risen Abomination and around 6 or so Risen Thralls. I cannot for the life of me win here. I’ve been trying my hardest, but it either boils down to too much focus on the boss getting my party killed by the Thralls, or too much focus on the Thralls gets my party killed by the Abomination.

As I said before, I’m using a Greatsword/Dual Swords, and none of my equipment is below level 30. My healing/utility skills are Ether Feast, Blink, Mantra of Pain, and Portal Entre. My Elite Skill is Moa Transformation (turns the opponent into a Moa for 10 seconds). Someone please give me some advice, this mission is crushing my soul.

Can you get Time Warp or any of the other Glamours? Are you familiar with combo fields and finishers? It sounds like killing speed is a part of the problem, and setting up some combo attacks can help speed that up.

As of now I don’t near have enough skill points to unlock a new Elite Skill, and yes, while I’m familiar with combo fields it’s difficult to set them up properly, as the fight takes place in a very confined space with a boss who uses knockdowns very commonly and frenzies all the time, so usually I get interrupted before I can pull a good one off, and I don’t have a lot of room to dodge either. Thanks for the response though.

You should be able to group up with others if you need to in order to complete your storyline. If you want to do it solo, I’m not sure what to tell you as I haven’t played a mesmer.

Kite, Kite, Kite.

With my staff on or my scepter + focus on I was easily able to out run him while kiting him around the room. Took forever to finish him but I got him down.

Use the staffs teleport to maintain distance (along with V) and use the focus’s speed buff. Can also use blink and decoy for even better movement.

The way kiting in this game works is just a big circle btw, trying to kite in a straight line doesn’t work.

But yea I was p’d off when he killed me the first time. I was expecting some kind of reprieve after the hall o’ traps before I had to fight a hard boss with multiple minions and useless NPCs attempting to help.

That fight taught me that the more NPC backup a storyline mission gives you, the more you should be putting on survival skills. (The designers thought the npcs wouldn’t be completely useless I suppose? Like they literally walked into the room and got 1 shot)

Alright, thanks for the responses, I’m going to attempt it again and hopefully succeed this time.

I did this with scepter/pistol and staff. My utility stuff was mirror image, decoy, and blink and the first healing skill. I have tons of mobility and the ability to pump out illusions at a very fast pace with this setup and it really helped me avoid the normal thralls until they all went down and I could focus on the Veteran.

I am facing this same problem on my level 29 Sylvari Ranger…so much so that after the sixth try and multiple repairs I don’t have any money left to continue. I have tried all kinds of methods but with its health regeneration and ability to take down all the NPC’s quickly even with fire attacks to help overlay damage his health regen wins over all the pet switch, attack, weapon swap and heal cooldowns. Once that is done its done…a few times I started back with getting all the NPC’s revived with only him and he still took them all down and my pet and me. It doesn’t do any good to be a higher level either because you get that nerfed down to 28.

Same issue on my level 41 ranger with the ‘Dead of Winter’ quest. The difficulty level of that veteran mob seems really out of whack compared with the rest of the game play experience so far. I’ve read on other sites online that you can pull him into the trapped hallway, but I tried that and it didn’t damage him at all.

Really love this game, but that experience was so frustrating that I’m going to abandon the personal storyline for now. Really wish I could abandon the quest altogether and choose a different Order.

Yes. Well, at least you aren’t being forced to use Caladbolg. Which is what the OoW questline has you using. Now THAT makes things unneededly tough. I don’t know if the Vigil has you doing the same – I’m guessing it does.

I am having the same problem. This quest if very difficult. I have tried many online ideas and i am still stuck. Very discouraging.
