[Deleting Characters] Things to do?
Triple check everything on your characters; armor, weapons, trinkets, and inventory. If anything is account bound and often needed on characters (such as your good, 15+ slot inventory bags), put them in your bank.
Check your bank for anything Soulbound so you can salvage or forge them on the characters they’re bound to.
Make sure all materials are deposited/banked.
There’s no need to worry about skill points as spirit shards are all account bound; your hero points wouldn’t be able to be turned into gold, as far as I know. Just make sure you’ve logged into each character since the big patch last week.

Move your gathering tools to the bank as well. Anything not soulbound you should bank or convert to coin or mats. Anything soulbound that you can salvage, do.
In any MMO, the rule of thumb is to strip an alt bare before deletion, even if only for a few coppers worth. That way you don’t miss out on something valuable you should have saved. Here, account bound items in the bank will stay in the bank for your next created alt on your next server. (So I am told. I’ve never transferred).
Make sure to take any inventory bags out of their slots and put them in your bank. Some of those are worth several gold.
ANet may give it to you.
Here’s the list I use when I’m re-rolling a character (basically same as above):
- Move unbound and hard-to-replace gear to bank, e.g. exotics for veterans (maybe rares for new players).
- Salvage all soul-bound gear. If it can’t be salvaged, vendor. If it can’t be vendored, delete (or combine in the mystic forge, if you have the inclination).
- Unequip any outfits, so you aren’t confused later by whether the character is wearing any gear.
- Remove all gear, including trinkets, tools, back items, underwater gear.
- Repeat the store/salvage/vendor routine above.
- You should now have a naked toon with nothing in any inventory slot.
- Move all your bags into the default backpack. If there’s room in the bank, save for your re-rolled characters. If not, save the biggest ones; 8- or 10-slot bags are easily replaced for relatively little.
- Repeat all the steps above, even though you shouldn’t have to — I can’t tell you how many times I missed one thing. Most of the time, it wasn’t anything important — it only has to be valuable the one time, though, to make it worth taking this extra step.
Good luck!
Anything that’s in your wallet (gold, karma, dungeon tokens etc.) will be saved so you don’t need to spend them. That includes spirit shards (which have replaced skill points as a currency).
Likewise anything in your wardrobe, bank or material collections will be saved. And achievements, achievement points and things like your magic find percentage.
The most important thing is to move anything account bound (or unbound) that you want to save into the bank. If you know what characters you’re going to make after moving you may be able to be a bit more selective (e.g. if you’re not going to have a warrior or guardian and not planning for a revenant you don’t need to keep any heavy armour) but if in doubt save it.
Also don’t worry about whether anyone else would consider it worth saving, go by what you want. For example I’d willingly delete one of the boosters I never use to make room for Polla (a low level accessory) simply because I can’t get it back.
Then go through Illconceived was Na’s entire list with each and every character before deleting them.

How many chars you want to delete? o_O
Cos you might save time grinding for gold to gems instead of leveling all the characters again.
What is the actual population status of the Server you want to transfer to?
Just because you WANT to transfer does not mean you actually CAN transfer (easily).
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
What’s the point in transfering to another server? Or are you doing it for WvW? Just curious, as we are on a mega-server, so the server selection shouldn’t be relevant anymore. Or so I’ve been told several times.
The server you choose is only relevant for WvW with the mega server system. if you want to transfer because of WvW, remember that some servers are full and you can’t get in, even if you delete all your characters. So for example, you won’t be able to get into NA T1 and two of the T2 NA servers, because they are full.
