Different salvage kits for different items?

Q:

We have “basic” “crude” “masters” etc. salvage kits.

I get that the higher (more expensive) ones have a better chance of recovering upgrades if an item has one.

Intuitively, I suppose that means don’t waste a master salvage kit of a scrap of shredded cloth — use a crude kit for that, and save the master’s kit for some upgraded weapon a monster dropped that my character class can’t use.

I just want to double check on here that I’m understanding this correctly

Thanks!

A:

Yes, that’s more or less the best way to go about it. You can combine a fine, journeyman, master, and 3 mystic forge stones to get a mystic salvage kit (250 uses) which is currently a slightly better deal than master, though it has the same effectiveness IINM (value of this will vary based on gem/gold conversion, since mystic stones are a gem store item).

Current market price depicts Mystic Salvage Kits as being a money sink. Other than saving you space (which you shouldn’t worry about since you’re not going to typically loot 25+ rares in a single outing), it’s just a convenience item right now.

Although with the influx of Mystic Shards from Achievement Chests, you can opt to make one or two with those.

Typical salvage uses are:

Crude: White and Salvageable items. Optional: Blues.

Master: Level 68+ rares.

Black Lion: Level 68+ exotics.

For the remaining items (Blues/Greens), it’s a fine line between salvaging via Crude or just selling to an NPC.

Also note that since Exotics tend to sell for a good amount of money, unless the Rune/Sigil on the Exotic is especially valuable, you’re generally better off selling the Exotic directly on the Trading Post rather than salvaging it for Ectos. (You get a maximum of 5 Ectos, but this is quite rare. You can get anything from 0 – 5 Ectos for salvaging an Exotic.)

Assume you’ll get 1-3 ectos per salvage (ignoring outlyers such as 0,4,5) is how I interpret it. I also see if the sigil/rune sells more than the item itself. If it does, I salvage, if not, I save the item (unless it sells for 2-3x the sigil/rune price in which case I sell it).

I was just doing over-generalizations since I doubt he was close to leve 68 to be asking such [non-sensical bookah] questions.

Also used in most end-game recipes (if not all, depends on what you’re looking at).

salvage kit info:
Mystic and Master Salvage Kit have the same stats, the only difference being cost to make and stack size. Currently, Master Salvage Kit is far cheaper (61c per salvage vs. 1s83c per salvage). Mystic Salvage Kit is only cheaper if gem prices drop below 94s34c buys 100 gems (or you get Mystic Forge Stones for free from daily or w/e)
If you need to salvage something (let’s say you’re replacing your armor set), only use a black lion salvage kit if what the item is socketed with will sell on the TP for more than 1g84s24c (1g56s60c after TP tax). this is based on the current market prices of 3.2g=100 gems and 1 ecto sells for 18s50c.
Salvaging a level 68+ rare with a Master Salvage Kit on average gives 0.9 ectos (at current prices, this results in an average 16.04c return, not counting what it’s socketed with or TP tax)
Salvaging a level 68+ rare with a Mystic Salvage Kit on average gives 0.9 ectos (at current prices, this results in an average 14.82c return, not counting what it’s socketed with or TP tax)
Salvaging a level 68+ rare with a BL Salvage Kit on average gives 1.25 ectos (at current prices, this results in an average -15s28c return, not counting what it’s socketed with or TP tax)

what I do to stuffs I find:
basic salvage kit on any “salvage item” such as shredded cloth, and white items
blue and green items sold to vendor
master salvage kit any level 68+ rare (TP any lower level rare)
TP any exotic
