Do people really spam "1" ??
it won’t continue autoattacking if the target goes out of range, even if you are moving and the target will be in range by the time the attack goes off – so for melee yes, it does make a difference.
Well, it becomes easier to just spam the button when there’s lots of targets dying fast. There’s no real point in targeting non-elites if you’re melee, for example, because you’ll hit them just by swinging.
Also, the autoattack range for melee is actually shorter than the actual skill’s range so sometimes you won’t autoattack even if you can be hitting them.
So sometimes I end up spamming 1 in those situations, and it kind of becomes habit even when autoattack is firing off.
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
… my skill bar doesn’t accurately reflect the distance I can hit at, so I often have to manually fire my shots. I tend to now as habit even when well within range.
I should also point out that I use a Nostromo, so for movement I only use my thumb and mouse. I have 2+ fingers more for doing random button clicks over WASD setups.
I turn off autoattack so I do in fact spam 1.
Autoattack is on, doesn’t stop me from spamming 1.
so, I’m doing it wrong ??

By what metric do you want us to judge this in order to answer your question?
I already gave you all the information you needed in the original post, coglin.1496.

Yes, and several people answered you, capnflummox.3082, yet you posted asking the question again.
I already gave you all the information you needed in the original post, coglin.1496.
And several people gave their opinion bout why they ‘spam’ skill one. We are however not the ones to judge you from right or wrong. If you are enjoying the game, you are doing it right.
Personally I ‘spam’ cause I am constantly switching between kits and rifle on my engineer.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I spam it out of habit. I can’t help it.

I kinda wish auto attack would work correctly. For example if you max max range the TA boss as a warrior with longbow it doesn’t auto attack. So I end up going 111111111111111111111 F1 1111111111111111111 etc.
i had auto-attack on, i still spammed. i guess i like feeling like i’m doing something? lol.
that being said, i play a hammer (Guardian) and sometimes it’s more beneficial to time my #1 attacks. additionally, while playing dungeons, at certain points you don’t want to pull certain enemies to you yet and with autoattack (this is more for ranged weapons or skills) you can accidentally alert mobs you didn’t want to aggro and then everyone’s just like -______-’’’"""|||
so i do spam 1D

If the autoattack would work reliably I wouldn’t have to spam it. However, it seems that in many cases the autoattack thinks you are out of range when in fact you can hit the target just fine.
So I spam.
After trying the 1st attack on middle click in beta (sadly can’t be on left click without workarounds), I’ve bound it to Space since launch and been quite happy with it.
I also bound auto attack to space right on the first day since i’m so used to that from GW1.
I try to not spam 1 but many other games where 1 isn’t auto attack so i am used to hitting 1 a lot.
I spam 1 because a few patches back, my auto attack would just lag cast time wise. Everything else was running smoothly and not lagging, it was just auto attack screwing up.

If you’re a Melee character, then you do need to spam #1.
All too often, a mob will take a tiny step backwards. While you can still hit the mob with a melee attack and they can still melee you, this extra space between the two of you is enough to break the auto attack function of #1.
Another key function of #1 spamming is using melee attacks to hit opponents that are under Stealth. While my ranged characters get penalized from stealthing foes, my melee characters just keep blindly swinging. One of the favorite things on my melee characters is seeing a stealthed mob become visible because it’s a corpse (as a result of my guessing swings).
The final reason is that a melee character often wants to attack in a specific melee arc. By moving around the battlefield and spamming #1, you can make sure that you’re attacking the in direction you want (instead of having to aim at your targeted opponent).
I spam it on my main because I’ve moved “auto” to “For Great Justice”.
I spam with melee weapons and let the auto attack do it when I’m kiting or circling with a ranged weapon. The auto attack is not reliable with melee weapons so I’ve just started spamming 1.
can’t quote again, but
@Ksielvin:

that’s a pretty good idea actually. what do you use as jump then? too used to jumping with space.
although i can see the benefits of hitting #1 (space) while having your index and other fingers free to hit other utilities
