Dodging directions vs. V
You can also keybind dodge to a much better position (like a mouse 3 or 4 if you have those buttons).
Yes that evade will work, but it is a lot harder to time. If you dodge to the side before the attack, the boar is already lined up, so he’ll miss anyway. If you dodge backwards before the attack, you dodged too early and will still get hit.
It comes down to timing.
If you’re dodging when the attack hits then it will miss you even if the animation shows it hitting (This is when ‘Evaded’ comes up on the screen and it counts for the daily).
Alternatively dodging might put you out of range, if the dodge animation finishes and you’re far enough back that the attack can’t reach you then you won’t get hit but it won’t count as a dodge/evade either.
But if the animation finishes and you’re back standing up and still in range then you will get hit.

I just want to point out that if you are already strafing left or right when you press the dodge button you will dodge to the left or right (or forward if you are simply going forward at the time) so it’s possible to dodge to the side using V.
I don’t use the double tap at all. It makes you stutter. Personally, I bind dodging to the my mouse wheel. I push it to the right and I dodge.

I highly recommend putting it on your mouse too, if you have a 5 button gaming mouse Dodge is one of the best things to bind to it.
Double tap to dodge is one of the first things you should unlearn if you want to play Gw2 long term.
ahh double tap to dodge, bane of the jumping puzzles.
As others have said as long as your moving in that direction V (or where ever you bind it to) will hurl you in that direction.
As for evading to work there are 2 main components to a dodge, first is the most obvious one which is the swift movement, using this you can physically move out of the way of certain attacks, in the boars case dodging to the left or right will utilize this component while back of forwards won’t as you’ll still be in line for the attack.
The other component is the “evasion” component, while you are in the process of a dodge you are in a state we shall call evasion, during this state any attack that would normally hit you will be counted as “evaded” even if you are still physically in the attack area, in the boars case if you were rolling back or forth as the boar should have hit you the damage will be “evaded” even if the pig still runs through you.
This component is the most useful but takes the most practice to get used to the timing of.
How do you bind a dodge in a set direction? Just make the keybind DD or AA? Or does that depend on the software for a given mouse? I’d love to turn off double-tap-to-evade permanently
edit blah, may be time for a new mouse. Logitech doesn’t allow you to customize keystrokes beyond adding a ctrl/alt/shift to a combo. can’t do AA or DD, etc.

you don’t you bind a button to dodge (default is V) and then move in the direction you want to dodge and then press that button.

ah. Will try that. Thank you.
edit that will work really well. thank you
I turned double tap off and rebound dodge to left shift pretty quickly after the game came out. That way I can comfortably press the wasd direction i want to roll and hit shift with my pinky. V was not at all comfortable for me to use in the middle of a fight.

Which Logitech software are you using?
I’m using the one simply called Logitech Gaming Software and it definitely lets me do double taps or otherwise bind 2 keys to 1 button (I’d use the Multikey option, you could possible use Text Block but that seems like overkill).
I’ve never used Setpoint but I was under the impression it was the more advanced of the two so I would have thought it’d have the same option.
