Q:

Hey all,

I would say I’m still fairly noobish at this game, but I absolutely love it. One issue I do have though, is that the loot seems to be completely random.

Is this truly how the game is? Are there not any items that you can “only” get from beating certain bosses, or completing certain achievements? I ask because that’s probably the biggest drive for me to play games… the desire to get that “epic” item from that BAM (Big a## monster). Please and thank you!

I’d say the closest to what you’re looking for is the dungeon armor. It’s not direct loot, but you get tokens from running a dungeon and when you build up enough of those tokens you can get the exotic armor that dungeon vendor sells (they are in a row at the Postern Ward WP in LA, you can go preview all the looks there). Each vendor sells 3 different stat sets of the same skins, in 3 armor weights, so be sure to scroll down if you don’t like the stats in the first batch.

The armor is distinctive enough that those in the know can tell at a glance which dungeon you ran to get it, and even how many times you had to do it.

Also, I don’t know if they’ll do meta-rewards for LS events again (beyond the carapace skins currently getting ground out in SilverWastes) but there were a few things that could only be gotten once for a while, until they got added to the laurel vendors. Like the gas mask. I worked my butt off achieving that thing.

There are a couple of boss and dungeon specific items. All the items in the Treasure Collector collection for example are boss specific loot. Not all of them are equally desirable though. I wouldn’t consider any of them particularly epic just desirable due to the collection.

Yes. There are some recipes that drop from only certain bosses or champions in dungeons.

Azione,
In fact, there are many such BAM items. One just needs to know where to look

Ascended Items:
Certain events and encounters have a chance of dropping “ascended chests”, which allow you to pick an ascended item for yourself. For example, WvW conquests and some World Bosses!

World Bosses:
From some world bosses – you’ll find out which – you can get unique, super pants items. A sick-looking mini? An awesome green-glowing set of shoulderpads? Or a mega cool title? Those are all unique for the boss, mind you! You see people with those very rarely! (I’ve maybe seen 2-3 in total, and they always brag with them!)

The Best Dungeons…
drop the best loot. And since in here loot has the same stats, “best” means baddest-looking. They mentioned above about token armors and weapons – and that’s cool! You also get special trinkets which are worth collecting! An awesome reward is when you get all possible items from dungeons, but that’s way ahead!
But what I mean by “Best Dungeons” is actually one dungeon/path combination:
The Aetherpath. This place is so awesome that you have a chance of getting Nightmare equipment from their chests. But there’s more…
You get to loot a sick set of blue-glowing eerie phantom equipment with unique item names (can’t miss them), each rarer than a legendary. How many people have I seen with those…? Two. Total. Ever. I delve there regularly, so poke me if you’re up for some action!

Fractals:
Last, but not least – the Fractals. The harder you go there, the better the loot. But most importantly, if you go hard enough, you get to hunt for BAM items. Yes, there is a special, impressively mean looking set of Fractal weapons – but they are only for the truly hardcore Fractallers… and if you are good enough, you can try to get your hands on the crown jewel. Not a weapon. Not an armor piece. A special elixir.

And there’s so much more… just go for it.

Want to look mean, and be awesome?

Many ways to do that in our game

This. There are unique weapon skins too.

There really isn’t much like the green weapons from GW1 in GW2.

A few world bosses have rare drops that are only obtainable in the bosses chest (some bound, some can be sold on the TP). Some examples are the unique trinket Sam from the Foulbear Kraal world boss chest, the Final Rest staff from the Shadow Behemoth chest, and the Sunless weapons (from Tequatl’s Hoard), rare Waterbreathers, and mini Tequatl from that world boss (Hoard is bound, the rest are not).

A few dungeon bosses and dungeon boss chests (specific ones in each dungeon) can drop extremely rare recipes. These recipes produce items that can be sold but give you another way of monetizing your dungeon tokens.

The aforementioned Twilight Arbor Aetherpath has some extremely rare unique weapon skins that drop from the end chest (unbound). There are also Fractal weapon skins that are only available from the final daily reward chest when doing Fractals of the Mists (and these are bound, so they tend to be prestige items).

Dungeon armor/weapons, but since you can also earn these from doing sPvP, I wouldn’t consider these unique any more. Arah armor is still sometimes considered prestige.

There are certain rewards that appear only on certain maps. You have the Apothecary exotic trinkets that drop from any mob in Southsun Cove. Unique minis, a required component used to make “insect in amber” weapons, and exotic trinkets from the chests in Dry Top. Exotic trinkets, Carapace armor skins, unique minis, and transformation tonics from chests in the Silverwastes.

Finally, there are unique rewards from doing certain achievements. You can browse the available achievements (though some you must unlock before you can view them) and mouse-over the reward chest if there is one to see what it gives you. One recent example is a Skritt transformation tonic obtained by completing the Silverwastes jumping puzzle the first time. Others are unique ascended trinkets (though most eventually get placed on the Dry Top or Silverwastes vendors). Completing collections are also a source of some unique items, like the Spirit backpiece skin or the Karmic Converter npc for your home instance.
