Does finishing the map matter?
1: You dont need to do anything. It’s a free game and where most games are pushing you to do one or the other thing GW is totally different.
2: Almost everything offers experience, so there are many many ways to level up. Off course concentrating on one or two things might leave you underlevel if you move on, simply cause it has to be challenging and almost everything rewards experience.
3: The reward for being a completionist (and doing everything) consist of three things
a: doing a map fully gives you bonus xp (bout 10% of a level), crafting materials, appropiate for the area (e.g. a startermap gives copper ores), a few silver, and 2 high end gear (again appropiate for the level the map was designed for).
b: a title for doing it all (all maps 100%)
c: It is needed to craft a legendary weapon. but those weapons are very high end and are only for allround players. Beside the 100% map completion you need to get two crafting professions to the end, gather loads of materials, do many many events, spend a long time in World versus World, etc. If you like a grind those weapons are nice, but its a reward for the grind, not something you have to do.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!

Glad to know having a job and a lack of 50 hours a week to spend on the game makes me “Not a real player.” Thanks for clearing that up.

That is not what Mercury said. ‘Allround’ means those who play every ascpect of the game. To craft such a weapon one needs more than map completion, one also has to get a lot of badges from WvW and a huge amout of crafting materials. You can do that even with one hour to play, it just takes longer.
So you bought GW 2 and felt entitled to start completing the map after one another? Ye it may turn boring if you just mindlessly do the the skill points and vistas etc. Try to pay notice to the environment. There alot of stuff you are going to miss if you just run around doing map completion.
Also I don’t understand what you mean by saying “things you have to do”. You don’t have to do anything. You can just sit in Lions Arch all day. That’s your decision.
Try different classes, google information of the map you are in and find interesting stuff to explore. Some maps even have mini-dungeons and jumping puzzles.

People in my guild tell me that I have to do map completion to get the money to afford supplies to level my proficiencies and craft gear and yadda yadda yadda. I just want to enjoy the freaking story. It’s a wonderful, beautiful, well crafted game and I would like to see it some day if I can stop having to go on hundreds of side missions and exploring quests and jump puzzles just to have the gear to keep my pansy kitten elementalist from almost dying every single fight.
If there is anything you HAVE to do it’s doing things other than just the story to keep up with the level requirements. Map completion certain CAN help with leveling crafting assuming you want to max all 8. If you just want to level one or two then the map completion may end up completely useless.
Running around just completely the hearts and killing the stuff to fill the hearts(usually the fastest way to fill a heart).
Change profession to Warrior/Guardian w/ Greatsword. Less complicated gameplay problem solved. Do Hearts and craft to level easily. Group for challenging content. No jump puzzles necessary, and no map completion needed either.
But you’re missing out on basically the main reason why GW2 is a GOOD game. These features seem like things you don’t like. You may be playing the wrong MMO for your interests/playstyle.
If you want to enjoy the story, you pretty much have to level up in some way or another as the Personal Story aspect of the game does not give you enough exp to keep up with the next step’s level range. For example, if you did ONLY the personal story stuff up until the level 10 quest, you would only have enough exp to be level 4 or 5. One of the drawing points of GW2 is that just about everything gives exp in some form, although for those just starting out, map and side quest completion are generally the best two ways for people to level up, make money, and unlock utility slots.
Tho if you only want to experience the personal story without having to deal with anything else in the game, I wouldn’t think its possible aside from having some lvl 80 friend carry you through the whole thing…. but that’s missing out on the point of an MMO imo.
Another hint: If you’re slow on leveling and dislike vistas, just visit the other races’ starting areas and do hearts and events over there. I really would recommend doing the skill challenges though if you want to unlock skills quickly…you will get skillpoints by leveling, too, but I doubt those are sufficient to unlock everything. Also, the skill challenges are usually very easy to reach.
On another note, you might really want to try some other profession – elementalists are fairly difficult for beginners. If you like ranged combat, try a ranger or necromancer. If you prefer melee, go with warrior or guardian (yes, I know they can do ranged, too, but they are far better at melee).

He gave you the right advice. I work and travel all the time, and haven’t had a lot of time to spend on legendary. However, it’s easy to attain gear equivalent to legendary without any grind. I do Fractals level 20 easily, and I’m a casual player.
Just keep enjoying level appropriate content. You don’t have to do everything. You don’t have to grind. You don’t have to farm. Unless you want to.
Tip: don’t read up the forum/guides too much. Too many people whine here.
