I was curious if anybody had noticed any type of increase in drop quality while using magic find gear as opposed to not. Personally I haven’t been too happy with my results… in my personal experience i feel like i am getting the same, or even worse drop rates WITH MF gear than without. I’m hoping this is just some weird fluke or even maybe just my own bad luck….. but I managed to farm frostgorge and orr with 203% MF and only got 1 rare in an hour and a half. Any info on mf or other input would be appreciated. =)

problem with MF is that what it effects the most isn’t what people want.
It will greatly increase things you get commonly but rare things will still be rare due to the base chances.
Something with a 20% drop chance (blues would fall in this sort of range I’d say) with 200% MF is then 60% drop chance, while a 1% drop chance item (rares I’d say at best would reach that) would still only be 3%
And drop rates are actually much lower bases than that, it still gives you more chance than non MF users but its not going to have you swimming in them
MF gear does the following: increase the potential quality of dropped items, in exchange for significant stat loss.
Sure you’re at +200% MF, but if you deal half the damage and it takes you twice as long to kill something, (also it’s way harder to tag mobs in large events) you may be getting less loot overall.
Yes it works.
There are two important things to keep in mind. First of all the random generator will always be active, meaning you can have lousy drops with magic find on.
The second is like bcd said. The loss of stats means you kill slower.
So does it work? yes!. is it worth it…Well you don’t get any big advantage over others. I still wonder why people are surprised by that
It works fine. Generally what I’ve experienced is getting greens in place of blues. I run side-by-side with my roommates so comparisons at the end of the night are easy—never formally tallied it though. The rare drop rate doesn’t seem to budge, but I mystic forge all the greens for yellows anyhow. It is in this way that I truly benefit from magic find—but I did it by consciously sacrificing survivability {made possible by having a reliable group}
MF is basically like playing on hard mode, you lose damage and survivability, and the mf just about makes up for your slower killing rate.
MF is best in places where you can tag lots of mobs, since the increased chance for valuable drops can trigger more often. To really maximize it, get the minor benefits for being in a group and for killing mobs over your level (which means Orr events that scale up readily). It is for this reason that the Plinx chain was so popular and why shelter/penitent/Jofast’s is probably the best spot now.
Im also willing to bet if you stack mf too high it will work against you.. as your rolling on rarer loot more/too often.. so loot over all goes down with a marginal gain of maybe one more green but 4 less blues per run for example..

Thats not how it works it will never NOT give you loot because it rolled on something higher as all loot drops roll highest rarity and down
