Dungeons, fractals, raids? What's the diff!
What you refer to seems to be Open World dungeons. What most people call dungeons are instanciated (separated from the world, specific places where only your group can go and is alone there). You can learn about those here .
Their entrances are referenced in the wiki as well and you should have received in-.game messages from your Herald telling you to go there.
Feel free to ask more questions about those if the wiki isn’t enough.
EDIT:
As of fractals, they are a separate type of dungeons and their entrance can be found in Lion’s Arch. I wouldn’t advise starting by those.
There are 8 dungeons in the game, each with Story and Explorable mode. Explorable mode has ‘paths’ usually three, but there is an exception with Arah.
This will explain them better and even show where they are: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeon
Fractals of the Mists is a different dungeon, located in Lion’s Arch.

Raids are not in this game although some people keep on asking for them.
You can find out a pretty close Apearence time table for your server on those ‘’world dungeons’’ (what i call world bosses) here; (just click on your server)

these arnt always 100% but there pretty kitten good.
Dungeons are what people call instanced places inside (or outside) so read all about them here and they also give you locations, boss run downs and what gear is available through tokens; http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeon
dungeons will net you Chests with gear and also bosses drop gear too, 2 modes story: obvious is obvious it has a story or explore-able mode where you choose out of a ’’path’’ say 1,2,3 (or 4 in some cases) and just do that single path and then leave or do another path.
Fractals are dungeons for people that what an increasing challenge, some unique skins drop here too but basically you start at fractal lvl 1 and it scales to infinity so the higher you get the tougher they get.
theres not reall any Raids at the moment, a raid i would call more than 5 people so between 10 and 100 or seomthing, so basically world bosses can be considered ‘’open world raids’’
There are also mini dungeons in this game which aren’t instanced, and can be accessed through various methods. There’s one that’s ‘hidden’ behind a dynamic event chain, for example. The only way to get to it is to finish that specific chain. After that, a portal spawns and you can enter the dungeon through the portal…but it’s not instanced. It’s part of the world.
The dungeons are instanced as are fractals, which is different from the other dungeons in the game, more like a series of related, instanced mini dungeons that spawn in random order, so you never know which one you’ll get.
There are no raids in this game. Raids usually refer to raid groups, which are parties larger than the normal party size for a game. Since you can’t group up here in parties larger than five, there are technically no raids in this game, though some people compare open world bosses with raids.
To me they have a different feel that raids in other games, and the term raid is not widely used in Guild Wars 2 at all.
Sweet thanks guys, I found an APP for the world ones, once I get some good gear I will check other the other 8 dungeons. Thanks for the help.
A “raid” is content that requires advanced preparation from an organized group. Both setting up a team and command structure, as well as obtaining needed game enhancements (mats for consumable buffs, keys to unlock, and so on).
Raids are not done in one sitting, but over a length of time.
MMOs in general have very few raids left. Even WoW; the king of “raiding”, has moatly 10-person and 25-person dungeons now. They are organized under the title of raid, but only a handful take much organized play.
A “Dungeon” can be handled by a group of people who come together for the task, often shortly beforehand or even as the task begins. This is much more the popular format now. GW2’s open world massive Champion encounters are open world dungeons, not raids.
WoW’s current ‘World Bosses’ are 40-person “Dungeons”. Compare them to the open world bosses of classic WoW – that could takes weeks of preparation and training to complete. Those were open-world raids. The Open world bosses of WoW today have as much pre-organization to them as a group event in Orr has here. It is literally whoever is in the zone pwns face on a giant dinosaur or giant tar monster without even so much as saying hello to the other people.
Raiding really isn’t that liked by most players… Most of them just like ‘oversized Dungeons’.
If you actually put people in front of some content and tell them:
“Ok, to do this you will spend weeks getting everything to open that front door unlocked, and then weeks farming up all the mats to make cooking, sharpening stones, and potions for it, and then enter with 40 people and still spend weeks of wiping with no reward until you finally master it by a 1% margin.”
- They would not want that.
But they do like “give me a dungeon my entire guild can zone into all at once and pwn face with little effort for sweet loot on the first try.”
- Until they’re given it, and stuck with it for a year and a half with nothing else because it takes that long to make it and then to make the next one… And it becomes a situation where the “OMG I PWN FACE” looks silly when even the people not wearing armor and missing w weapon can do it half AFK…"
Yeah… raids are mostly dead. Good thing too. Massive dungeons really aren’t that amazing… people don’t have the patience for something that large when it is a challenge and they also face the challenge of getting 40-internet geeks to get along.
Small dungeons provide a much better option to make content that can scale for easy and difficult challenge and allow a group small enough for the human factor to be manageable by casual acquaintances.
