If you’d like to help out the wiki for a few extra gold, I’m hosting an ongoing improvement project.

Check out On Wiki of Gold, where articles are regularly selected for improvement. One article has information missing or could use general improvement, and the other article doesn’t exist at all! Make an edit that contributes to either of the two selected pages. Then enter your name on the On Wiki of Gold page, and I’ll send a couple of gold your way.

Everyone is welcome to participate, whether you’ve previously made zero edits or 100,000 edits. Try to copy the style of other articles. This list of formatting guides is also helpful. If you’re just starting out and you mess up really badly, I have the pages on my watchlist and will be able to fix or undo mistakes using the page’s history, so don’t let fear hold you back.

The Guild Wars 2 wiki is an amazing resource with a ton of helpful information. In a game that is frequently growing and changing, there’s always something that needs updating.

Feel free to comment here on what other articles you think should be focused for improvement in future weeks.

You don’t have to actually ‘edit’ the page. You can leave information for the article in the ‘leave article feedback’ tab. That probably counts for the offer.

Good luck.

Sorry, but yes. I verify every contribution, but I can’t do that in languages that I can’t read.

I’d accept this. But still, nobody needs to be afraid to edit articles! If you have accurate info that isn’t listed, just click [edit] and add it. You can have your best guess at the formatting and let someone else fix it up if it wasn’t perfect. There are many experienced editors that would have no problem correcting your formatting, but they can’t do that without the information on the page.

I do edit text from time to time (spelling errors, syntax, grammar, etc.), but have no idea how to redirect, put in links, those little picture icons, etc.

It’s easier to just leave it in the ‘Feedback’, and let others attend to it…if they ever see it, or having seen it, add it to the article. =)

If you don’t know how to put in links or icons you can look it up in another pages source code if you hit edit there. As stated before it does not need to be perfect.

Much too complex.

I was under the impression the ‘Leave Feedback’ tab was introduced to make it easier for those unschooled in the more complex aspects of Wiki editing. Hopefully, we won’t be discouraged from using it.

I’ve contributed to the wiki(s) and I find the community to be super helpful. Goodness knows I flub things from time to time, particularly since the editing system on wiki is different from, say, the forums or normal documents. However, even when I misplace a quote or insert an wildly-rampant bullet point, another wiki contributor has quietly corrected what I flubbed and it’s all good.

I think this is a sweet initiative, Dash, and thanks for organizing it!

I want to thank again Dash for leading this fantastic project.

More importantly, and as a few said before, we need to counter the perception that editing the wiki is difficult. You should not be afraid to contribute, the same way that you should be ashamed that you do not all the things involved in the wiki or be afraid that someone would react to your edits. The wiki truly is a collaborative website where everyone has its say and role. Some editors take care of removing typos and correcting English, some focus on the formatting, others go deeper into the code. And the bulk of the editors simply add information, and then other editors adapt, format and sometimes correct it. You also don’t need to spend a lot of time (although the wiki community would love to have you ), for example we’ve introduced a new “Leave Article Feedback” tab where you can just leave the information as is, so that other editors can use it!

Guess the offer is only for the english wiki?!

Can I ask what language wiki you’re from, if you don’t mind?

Much too complex.

Absolutely not, you should continue to use the Leave Feedback feature if you’re already using it. I’ve heard that it brings a good amount of information to the English wiki and it’s valuable. That being said, Dash’s project is his own and manages it as he sees fit.

Using the Feedback button is absolutely encouraged, so much so that we’ve got some editors looking into a better way to track edits to the talk pages!

We’d much rather hear from contributors than not; learning wiki-code is not a requirement for helping out.

Guess the offer is only for the english wiki?!

I’m from the german wiki… well kinda… There are much more holes to fill there, so most of the time i go for the english wiki right away. But there are articles wich are even better than the english ones – so i can gather information from both sources, if i have to.

I considered to contribute to some wiki articles before, however i hesitated because of the simple lack of ‘visible’ appreciation for the effort you have to put in. The wiki is taken for granted (wich isn’t manatory a bad thing), but as someone whose biggest motivator is the appreciaton of others, the wiki is not very appealing.

Still – the simple 2g offer from Dash, accompanied with the simplest kind of appreciation: ‘I see what you did there!’ is enough for me to give it another try.

I absolutely love Dash’s idea – maybe one could expand the idea to a broader spectrum of articles and wikis (maybe with ‘official support’?)

This kind of thing motivates me too. I look over every edit and type out a reply to every contributor. Though many of the things I have to say end up being similar, no cut-and-pasting is involved in these responses.

I absolutely love Dash’s idea – maybe one could expand the idea to a broader spectrum of articles and wikis (maybe with ‘official support’?)

If you have the funds and the time for it, I strongly encourage you to consider starting something like this for the German wiki. It’s a great feeling to see so many dozens of articles improved and even more created for the first time.

Active Set 52 contains Golden Lost Badge or Go for the Gold.
I’d really like to make an updated video to these, since you can glide now (and i want to make sure it’s shorter than the existing 45min video. The huge problem is: i collected all the coins already, so there is no way i can actually show them in the video (wich is of course really bad).

So i’d like to raise the question (to the ANet Team) if there is a way to reset my coins for this project (free accounts are suboptimal because of the lack of gliding).

No idea how to create a new page for the new item to link to.

It’s easy to create a page. Type the page name into the search bar, and click Go. If there is no article with that name, there will be a line that says " Create the page “[what you typed]” on this wiki! " Click that link to create the page.

Note that the wiki has pretty firm guidelines for what should and shoudn’t have an article. But every now and then you might find an NPC, item, or object that doesn’t have one yet. If you do, feel free to create the article! Other editors will join in and improve it further.

To add to Dash’s example, there is often more than one way to do things on the wiki, which leads to it being an iterative process. Simply starting a step helps others to finish it. For instance:

Alex was working on updating the charr storyline. He was not able to complete the enemies. You can see that the “Veteran Lost Minotaur Bull” and the “Bog Skale Tyrant” have names in regular black text. They were not set to link to any page.

Konig added two square brackets around those enemies (you can see what he added in the top right panel). When he did so, the “Veteran Lost Minotaur Bull” and “Bog Skale Tyrant” would have appeared as red text instead of black. This colour tells people that a page may need to be created. Click on this page to see examples of red links.

Konig then created the page the page for the Bog Skale, and I created the page for the Minotaur.

It is not expected that you know how to do all of the above steps. In fact, the point is you don’t need to know in order to help. While Alex was working on one thing, Konig signaled that pages could be made for two NPCs (by using those square brackets). He created one page, I created another. Others will come by and add to those pages over time.

And, more to your original point, here’s how you directly create a page. Let’s say the Mystic Forge gives you a never-before-seen weapon called the “Uber Slayer”. You type the name into the wiki’s search bar and find nothing. You click on the red link that the wiki shows you, type in “I just got this from the MF”, and start a race of wiki users who will iteratively (?) add information to it. Look at the number of iterations Bolt has seen.

We don’t expect perfection, but we love when people start a ball rolling .

As one more aside, we all make mistakes. It’s how we learn. This was the terse message I received when I first edited the wiki. I’m happy that I chose to study my mistake and move forward, rather than slink away and never edit again. I’m even happier to see new contributors appear on the wiki, make mistakes, and have other editors help them improve. You have nothing to lose by just giving it a shot; we don’t all bite .

Well, turned out that the item (taken from the forums) would have needed a new page, had it been an actual item. But, it was only a typo by the forum-poster, so no page was found. Lol.

Thank goodness no new page was created!

Creating the wrong page is no big deal. In fact, it’s a constant non-issue that we all do. We have highly-skilled and under-paid admins who will clean up such things. We’d rather have to clean up wrong pages than risk missing out on the right pages! If you see it, let us know.

NB: Admins get paid via warm messages and random emoticons left on their talk pages. They do not receive any monetary compensation.

I agree with this so much.

A great time to add info is when you’re looking for an answer but the wiki doesn’t have what you’re looking for. When you eventually find the answer to your in-game question elsewhere, it’s often appropriate to record it on the relevant page (or click the “leave article feedback” button).

Four months in, and I cannot think of a more glorious page housed on the wiki than this one: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/User:Dashface/On_Wiki_of_Gold/Archive

  • To Dash for organizing this, thank you.
  • To those that have donated their time, gold, or ideas to help Dash out, thank you.
  • To every contributor to the wiki, whether you’re listed on the linked page above, whether you’ve edited an article with an account or anonymously, whether you’ve left a message or feedback for us on a talk page, whether you’ve taken the time across other mediums to promote and push the wiki to higher standards, whether you’ve stood in LA and patiently explained to someone in map-chat how to use the /wiki command, thank you.

For those looking for more information, I’ll link the page one more time.

But seriously, thank you.

I’d like to highlight the current set at OWoG, namely the whole of Divinity’s Reach. The upcoming Living Story segment seems like it may inflict some changes on the map of DR and Queensdale, and when that happens things tend to get lost forever. Things like your favorite bargain seeker, merchants, pub crawlers, kids playing , etc. that you don’t often think about until they’re not there any more – the little details that give the game its flavor. If you feel things like that are worth preserving, we could certainly use a hand.
