Edge of The Mists for leveling
Hi all,
I have been told that The Edge of The Mists is the best place to level up a character. Is this correct? Is it recommended that I should continue doing The Edge of The Mists right up to level 80? Is there another strategy? I personally enjoy the PvE activities, but am wondering on the best way to level my character.
I have a level 37 elementalist.
Thanks in advance
If you want to be fodder for the guilds running around the EotM stopping the Karma Trains, go right ahead. Be fore-warned that EotM is a WvW map, As such, being an upscaled player, you are easily one-shotted in EotM by better players. Stick to exploring and hearts.

Don’t worry about the comment above. Take it with a grain of salt.
Edge of the Mists is decent for leveling, but only if you run with a “Karma train”, that is, a group of people that run around taking objectives in the map for the sole purpose of farming Karma/gold/training.
If you’re on your own, you are at the mercy of any non-AI that catches sight of you.

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.

Well, if you read the WvW threads, the plan is for the WvW guilds to take back EotM. There are already plenty of areas in the game that Karma/Farming occurs. Also the Veterans/Champs in EotM hit WAY harder than any in PvE – I have seen them one shot upleveled players.
If you want to play WvW, then by all means learn WvW in EotM, if you want to just RUSH to 80, which doesn’t take that long doing exploring and hearts, take your chances.
EotM is a high-variation leveling spot. It CAN be an amazing source of experience, but it could also be a slow and frustrating venture. It all depends on whether or not your server is currently performing well.
If you don’t have a commander, there probably isn’t going to be a good karma train, and it can be difficult to keep track of even if there is one. You can have a commander and yet still only have 10-20 people in the train, meaning that you get steamrolled every time the other servers decide that you are in good need of a bad touch.
Or things could be ideal. You could have a good karma train that allows you to level up much, much faster than you can through PvE. It’s all situational.

This considered, if you have dedicated WVW guilds wanting in on EoTM, then yeah you’re better off in PVE.
All in all, if nobody decides itll be fun stopping you, you’re golden.
Other than that lol nope.

I took a brand new character into EotM and in just under 3 days worth of play time, that character was lvl80, solely from running the Karma trains in EotM. If you’ve done the hearts and exploring already a couple times, its extremely tedious to level that way again. EotM is a much more time-efficient way to level if you dont want to bother doing all that again.
In a Karma train, if you know your place is at the back, offering whatever support you can from back there, you will rarely die unless there’s a zerg collision and both sides suffer massive casualties – in which most cases, you being upscaled doesn’t really matter as you likely would have died anyway in a collision like that.

1. The plan will fail because the masses are against them – after the hype about that [EotM] guild dies down, it’ll be back to a 24/7 ktrain whenever a server can muster the numbers.
2. Name one area where a train can be used to help level up. Just one. Yeah…ANet nerfed them.
I just chuckle at the people in [EotM]. Yes, they want to “take back” EotM “for wvw” and I have to ask….“and do what with it?” Sure it functions like WvW, but it has absolutely no meaning to it. Most WvWers dont consider it a true WvW map because it has absolutely no bearing on the WvW matches. Unless that changes (at which point it just becomes yet another map that needs coverage), their view on it isn’t going to either. Those players that want to actually be playing wvw are better off going to their BL or EB and actually doing something that impacts their match.
If that is your first character to level 80, I really recommend doing the PvE stuff (Map completion, Personal Story, Gathering, Crafting …).
The EotM train is faster for sure, but there you end learning nothing but how to press 1 and follow a blue tag, but if you just leveling an alt, then go for it, the wvw ranks and badges are useful to gear your main or a WvW focused character.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

But then they couldn’t kill a zerg of uplevels and feel superior.

With arrow carts none the less because they don’t actually want to fight them. Go figure…

That’s what they all it…. that’s not why they actually do it though….

ye for stupid people bad at math – go tp and buy this bags for 1 or 2g and you ahve more than you get in 1 or 2hours^^
Do it. It’s the best way to avoid the horribly tedious experience that’s the current state of leveling a character.
If you’re worried about the karma train being derailed: it’s always happened from time to time with all kinds of trains. People used to derail the Queensdale champ train all the time by killing bosses before the train arrived. With EoTM, just leave the instance and go to another.
There is no real concerted WvW effort to “take back” EoTM. It’s been a massive fail-map WvW-wise since the beginning : that’s the reason it’s now a PvE karma train in the first place.
Why would a Guild want to “take” EotM when that would take away from resources in the actual WvW maps? Is this some sort of vendictive assault on PvEers that use EotM for various uses or just some sort of Ego trip to dominate an area without any other real organized resistance?
I may be totally missing some potential benifit for a Guild in the EotM maps, so I apologize for being ignorant if that is the case.

Well, when the WONDERFUL Queensdale train was taken away, the train invaded EotM which was a basic overflow/beginners map for WvW. IT IS A WvW map, if you don’t want to be involved with that, then don’t go into to that map. It is unavoidable it you have 3 different factions fighting for the same piece of land. Saying anything different is just hysterical.
Don’t say:
1. It is stupid for WvW’s to derail the train.
2. It takes resources – no not really.
3. It is NOT a WvW map
All three are truths, not made-up reality.
I have said my peace in this thread – done now….
Peace and enjoy.
So what actually is a karma train? Is this a group of characters that are focused just on obtaining karma?

Exactly.
WvW Ranks, level and drops are consequences of that karma train.

….and badges….I’ll take a Laurel discount for a few hours in EotM any day.

Not sure who you are arguing with or responding to, but If that was an attempt to answer WHY, I missed the “because”.
1. Nobody said it was stupid, but there must be a reason…is it a secret?
2. My comment was that it takes resources AWAY from a fight that has a point for a Guild based WvW team….the REAL WvW maps. Again, what REASON is there for Guild based WvW to want to “take” EotM when actual competition exists in another set of maps?
3. It has no bearing on the weekly WvW map score, so while it is a WvW map…it’s not one that really matters (or shouldn’t matter to anyone serious about actual WvW).
Again, I’m just asking out of curiosity as to why a Guild of WvW players would want to do this….if it’s simply for easy kills, that’s reasonable (kind of cowardly, but understandable).

Why would any guilds want to ‘take back’ eotm anyway? The guilds are the ones that abandoned it due to it being skyhammer 2.0.
I really recommend you to actually level up the hard way in PvE, learning your class mechanics. Following a train hitting autoattack will end up in you becoming a level 80 with a class you don’t know how to play

This unfortunately happens far more often than one might hope.

Been there, done that, myself. :/
