Dont know if those are optimal power builds , just something i threw together
Ranger is often considered to be one of the worst large group WvW necros.
Eles can do way more damaage, but more importantly more support with AoE CC and water fields.
Necros are what you really want to run for WvW damage. Run a power well build, and just reap in the loot bags as players melt in your wells/life transfer/life blasts and are tickled by your staff marks.

And does a fully pimped ranger crappy damage ?
Ranger has bad AoE’s, and by extension, is bad in large group situations. Personally I think all of the medium classes excel at roaming, in particular.
with that in mind, I’d suggest a staff ele. meteors hurt, and you also have statics and water fields for days
well , what was most appealing was the 1500 range on the ranger. Its so wonderful to hit people on the outer wall from the inner wall inside stonemistcastle
but if its hitting like a wet noodle it isnt realy worth that much.
SO … POWER necro or POWER elementalist ?

Dont play ranger in zergs, seriously.
You wouldnt try to bunk a point as thief as well.

Longbow ranger isn’t that bad with piercing arrows and fire sigil, but like the others said necro would be better. If you do go ranger use ranger runes not strength rangers only have access to might with warhorn, and rage as one, and yes you could use a sigil of strength. Just because runes of strength are the most expensive doesn’t mean they’re always the best.

On necro you can run back line or frontline. You need the trait focused rituals yo give your Wells 900 range ground target. Staff marks have 1200 range and putrid mark is a good burst. Your life blasts get much stronger at 600 range or closer (they can hit like a truck with Max soul reaping) and that is also the range for axe. You can alsotrait for focus to be 1200 range too. I run a zerkeroes knights mix and it works pretty well.
So it’s range isn’t as long as ele or ranger but you’ll get more emphasis on aoe damage mid to long range which is devastating in organized groups. Rangers are awful for what you want as they don’t have nearly enough ranged aoe. And as I’ve said ele can do ranged damage well but you’ll be expected to use your support skills more often, although some people run zerker staff which is fragile but almost as powerful as a power necro.

I would personally recommend glass cannon elementalist. Even a cannon ele has the cooldowns if necessary to stay safe if you use your combos well, and Vapor form is as ever an amazingly useful skill. You can pump out obscene amounts of damage, primarily via Meteor Storm and Lavafont and still provide amazing support via multiple combo fields. Pretty much all arcane skills will critically hit, and Arcane Wave got a pretty substantial buff when it was made to be 900 range targeted.
Keep in mind that all staff auto attacks (except air) arc, and thus have an effective range that exceeds 1200 – closer to 1500 range.
There are numerous builds out there too so you have the choice of being more support, glass or some hybrid.
Some engineers tout grenadier zerk in WvW, and condition is still popular as ever with 1500 range. But personally I don’t use my engineer in this fashion as I have a pretty lousy computer and often end up raining down death on my own zergs with reflects that I haven’t loaded visually…
