Elementalist, engineer, or Mesmer
Hi!
I can’t decide which character I should main!? I have played all to level 80 but don’t have a ton of experience in all areas (pve, pvp, and WVW).
Elementalist- I really like the class and all the swapping. I like the versatility and support abilities that this class can offer.
Engineer- I am an engineer, so I am partial to this class. I like being able to swap kits for a given situation.
Mesmer- I am a twin so naturally I like the clones and phantasm. I love being able to confuse my enemies and support my team with TW and portals.
I am looking for a good profession in all aspects- pve, pvp and wvw. I run mostly zergs in wvw, but like everyone, when no one is on I like to roam. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Of the three, mesmers are by far the most desired by the people around them (oh hey portal our golems, reflect those projectiles, give us buffs, stealth us through the hard part, give these idiot zerk warriors Haste). The skill cap is very high, but it is for all 3 of the classes you mentioned. For pvp/wvw, almost all specs involve running a staff for defensive purposes, and for me thats not very enjoyable (Greatsword all the way!).
Engineers are an enigma (think World of Roguecraft: Warlocks are “Mushroom”). Static discharge gets you really high burst, albiet it limits your utility slot choices heavily. Kit builds get you ridiculous versatility, but are clunky to use. Probably best condition class in the game atm (yes, better than necros) for pvp. grenade engineers are arguably the strongest zerg ranged dps. On the downside, of the 3 classes you listed, it is the least likely to escape (RTL+Flash, Stealth+Clones+Blink > Rocket Boots). It’s also the least desired in pve farming groups of the 3 classes that you mentioned.
Elementalists dont have much spec versatility. Scepter/dagger burst, staff support or d/d hybrid bunker (PVT+healing). They are not as welcome in groups as mesmers, but they do provide lots of group buffs/cleanses/combo fields and conjure weapons can make some fights trivial. The upside is independence: good self healing, cleansing, damage, mobility, but not particularly awesome at any one thing. With FGS, RTL+flash, has the best escapability of the 3 classes for roaming, though is arguably weaker in 1v1 (especially if not D/D) than either of the other 2.
So there you have it. Do you want to be wanted, do you want to be mushroom, or do you want to be independent?

Thank you Raven!
I have all 3 and have quite a bit of time on all and honestly an engi with PVT armor and whatever trinkets is the most fun for me with just how much a trait change can instantly change what your role is im in a wvw guild and we ran out of eles late in a raid so i switched from nades to healing tank with no problem 2 water fields and 5 blast finishers roaming switch to SD and do massive burst. that being said its all your playing style
I have both a mesmer and elementalist I honestly prefer ele to mesmer. With mesmer, sure everyone loves you but I find it boring. All I do is time warp dance around making clones, shatter-rinse-repeat. And use feedback as a reflect.
Ele on the other hand is a much more fun and active playstyle especially for dagger/focus dagger/dagger and scepter/dagger builds. Who needs feedback when you can get swirling winds for you group? Same CD but a much stronget projectile denial skill imo. Scepter dagger is also very great for might stacking, since you can have anywhere from 4to6 blast finishers on your ring of fire, and then you can swap to lightning hammer and have one of the best DPSes for a light armor class. Fresh Air builds using dagger (or scepter even) are also great for DPS as you can constantly get support skills from the other attunements and go right back into air to burst enemies, usually with dagger lightning whip cleave (scepter arc lightings less DPS unless you take advantage of the piercing). Hope this helped, even though I prefer the ele I’d recommend leveling both, since you never really know what your play style is until you explore all the options.
