Hey!

When I made my elementalist, I choose water as my favorite element. But I have come to realize it is my least favorite element after playing for a few days. Will this affect my personal story negatively now that I’m not really into water attunement? Or was that just a choice that gives depth to my character without having any sort of personal story impact?

Nope.
That choice only changes the head piece you get in the beginning.
Only the race options changes your personal story, and only the lvl 10 and 20 lines, after that every race follow the same story line.

Each character has to answer 5 questions during character creation. The first 3 are race related. Two of them determine your level 10 and level 20 story arcs, the 3rd is cosmetic – only determining one of the NPCs you work with.

One is about your personality, how you overcome adversity. This affects some of the dialogue choices you get, but your personality will change depending on choices you make later on too.

The last one is profession specific and determines a piece of your starter gear, or your pet if you play a ranger. This is also completely cosmetic. These items have unique skins which you can’t get anywhere else, but the choice won’t affect your story or how other characters react to you.
