Engi or necro
I suggest you create both and see which one you have fun with the most.
Engi has more flexibility. Necro has better condition AoE and no cleave direct damage. Necros tend to be better for PvP type content, Engis tend to be better for PvE type content, between the two.
Neither has a very good escape from a crowd option other than the necro having F1 to use banked “life force”. Both are complex, the engineer more so. I cannot speak to running an Asuran engi (mine is human) but I have a leveled Asuran Necro D/D with staff alt. ‘zerker armor, weapons and trinkets with traits set in line with condi damage. She’s fast, deals a ton of damage, both direct and condi and does fairly well against a small mob. My engi (not leveled but knights accessories is where he’s headed) is pistol/pistol though I am going to start running a rifle.
From a fun factor, the necro wins hands down.
Engis are more difficult to master but necros cannot easily escape a fight gone wrong. Both are fun to level in PvE but not particularly good for dungeons. Really depends on play style zerg (necro) or roaming (engi).
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
Engineer.
Especially if asura.
Variable. Dynamic. Complex.

I find my necro (power tanky) to be amazing in most dungeons the amount of aoe damage following boon strip is awesome and useful. I play my engi (dire perplex rune bombs) in wvw. Both are fun both have different things to offer. These 2 classes are my mains. Try them both to like 15 or 20 see which fits you best.
Necros can disengage fairly easily with DS affording them more time, and equipping Spectral Walk as your utility skill (just let it run out rather than clicking twice, or you’ll snap back to where to you started). I’ve never found it difficult to disengage playing my Necro. Then again, with Engineer, put a few trait points into Tools and you can have Speedy Kits for near perma-swiftness.
Necros can be pretty tanky because of Death Shroud. Engineers lack that added surety, but I think they’re a more complex class because of the toolkits. That said, I love my Necro. She’s the only char I have that hasn’t gone through multiple reincarnations in the form of deleting and rerolling.
Definitely try them both up to level 20 (30 is better if you can bear it) to see which you prefer.
