I normally make long posts but this one will be sweet. Just need a nudge as highly unsure on these 2. Have been testing classes all week and they’re both equal but cba playing both.

Solo PvE- Pros and Cons for both?
PvP- I’m ok with this, both are fun.
Raids- assuming Ele is dps king and engi is mid table somewhere.
WvW- have seen what they can do here so am ok with this part also.

Any general insight greatly welcome. With ele I prefer d/wh and s/wh over staff but would play either. Engi was my original main but haven’t touched it in awhile.

What I’ve seen from Raids is it depends on what kind of damage is needed. Engi for condi, Ele for power (for the two classes that matter for this thread).

As for Solo PvE…

Both will do well. Engi gets its max dps through heavy kit-switching and has a priority list instead of a rotation for maintaining that dps (keep X skills on cooldown, use this AA while waiting for them to come off cooldown). Ele tends more towards rotations (which are harder for me, but that’s a subjective statement) since its attunements have CDs worth accounting for. That said, if you can get those rotations down, your dps and might stacking will be amazing, at the price of feeling squishy when you get hit.

I won’t get into dungeons or fractals since you specified solo pve.

IMO, Engi is the better option, just because it’s easier to switch things around based on what you’re dealing with, without changing your entire build. I feel the ele’s abilities are a little more tied to the traitlines (Who uses fire attunement without the fire traitline?), and thus requires more adjustments when changing things around. That said, Ele can be a lot of fun to run around with, and if the extra bit of tweaking isn’t an issue for you, well it’s a coin toss at that point. I have always felt that these two classes appeal to the same kinds of people, so it’s hard to differentiate them for me. Just my 2 cents.

Appreciate the first reply! Yeah it’s close as they’re both very enjoyable… I loved engi as my first main, I did drop it before hot came out as I was having more fun on necro and warrior however now am getting fairly tired of those. That was a big question I had. Survivability wise, ele I know is squishy.. how IS engi? I’ve seen engi solo all sorts like 100 mai etc… So looks legit. For things like general elites and champs in hot zones etc

engi can be squishy or not, depending on how you build it. I’ve seen builds that were tanky as anything, and I’ve seen ones that squish with the best of them. It’s a pretty flexible class tbh, so it depends on your playstyle.

For raids engi is situational. Mostly it’s only desired for VG, and that is only viper engi using dual pistols. Necro is preferred for condi damage over engi especially for double epi.

Ele is king for DPS in raids so you can’t go wrong with ele if you are looking at raiding. You will always be a desired class unless the meta drastically shifts.

I know this is going offtopic but it’s a fairly ok comparison and its the last class I have at 80.

Revenant. Condi and Power. How are they? Meta?

Solo pve- meta/great/good?
Solo dungeons like fractals/bosses- meta/great/good?
PvP I assume is meta as every team seems to run one and wvw run 4 according to metabattle.

In general play is a rev highly wanted and is it a strong class overall?

Necro is preferred for condi damage over engi especially for double epi. .

Still scratching my head here. From what I’ve seen Necro only wins out if you have 2 of them and good access to Epi bouncing targets, or maybe on a boss you need to range most of the time, otherwise Engi seems all around best if you know the rotations well. Is there something I don’t know about? Or is it more of the old “not many good ones so we assume they’re bad” thing happening?
