I hate to be “that guy” who asks about what profession he should play, but I simply cannot make up my mind between these two for my third main.

Backstory: I played Engineer as a main in beta and also rolled a Thief shortly after release, both of which I only managed to get mid-30’s, solely PvE. After release, I ended up leveling a Mesmer and a Guardian. And since then, I’ve been rather content with just the two, especially my Mesmer who I’ve really come to dominate in WvW. I’ve made a ton of alternate characters here and there, but I finally want to settle on an Adventurer class to work to 80. The problem is, I can’t remember exactly why I decided not to main Engineer or why I made the decision to stop working on my Thief. But now that I’m well experienced with the game and have re-discovered my playstyle, I’m willing to try either again… or an entirely

tl;dr I could use some advice on a third profession (and/or build suggestions) that suits my ideal playstyle.

My playstyle regarding GW2’s new holy trinity (in both PvE/WvW):

Control

  • Probably my favorite facet of playstyles.
  • As a Mesmer, focus #4 is my favorite skill in the entire game. Whether it’s pulling someone off a tower, over a cliff, grouping enemies together, or just interrupting to annoy the hell out of someone, I love it.
  • I really like cripples/snares/immob. on fleeing targets.
  • With that, I also really a enjoy mobility/swiftness both for traveling and risky escapes.
  • I really enjoy just messing around with my target via pushes/pulls/stuns, etc. This also includes being hard to kill at the sacrifice of low damage output (I currently run staff tank Mes).
  • Truth be told, I really think I like messing with and taunting my enemies more than I do killing them. The power of morale, yes?

Support

  • In a group setting, I like being able to help out my comrades in ways other than being just DPS. With my Mesmer, I enjoy being able to blink & stealth across the field to rez someone while my clones distract the target.
  • I like being a good supplier of boons or other utility for my party, but not a main support. I’m not interested in being necessary for group heals, etc.
  • Combo fields are nice, but not priority.

Damage

  • I’ve never been big on a direct damage type, but I’d be willing to try it.
  • I typically enjoy condition damage or degen/attrition style.
  • I can’t argue with doing damage, but large amounts of it is not a priority.

Thank you for reading, and I appreciate any responses, questions, feedback, or suggestions.

Tbh I’m not really sure witch is best, i only have real experience with warriors, have a mesmer tho and i’m having a blast in wvw with him. My 3rd toon is a thief, but he is only lvl 2 since i just got into pvp with him, saw how he works or better yet saw that i need to spend a lot of time learning to play him so i just gave up and went back to lvling the mesmer. Engineers can be a pain in the kitten for enemies expecially in wvw, and i say that because i was just taking a tower in wvw a few hours ago and a kitten engineer was always jumping from the tower on us throwing stuff at us running back in the tower and then coming back outside and doing the same.

So maybe creat both, go to pvp get in a tournament or just a fast match and see how a lvl 80 thief or engineer works for you?

I read what you put in your suggestion. I main an engineer.
Engineers are considered to be the hardest class to play. Here is why…
Our class is not forgiving at all. You make a mistake. 90% of the time it will cost you your life. Our class has a high apm. So many builds have you constantly pushing buttons half the time. So very high APM and reaction time.

Control:
Engineers have a ton of control. No matter which spec you do, you’re going to have a lot of CC capabilities. We are the masters of CC and no other class can dominate us in this regard. Some of my favorite and most used. Toolkit- you have a low CD pull that can be traited for even lower CD. You have an AoE cripple that you can put up around you. Rifle- You have a knock back (which also knocks you back) and an immobilize. We have so many traits centered around cripples and immobilize too on top of our skills. We also have slick shoes, one of the mokittenn skills in the game. Very funny to use.

Support:
Engineers have some of the best support in the game. Our main support mechanic is exliers and elixer gun. You have amazing boon application and condition removal (even more condi removal if traited).

Damage:
You wont do a lot of direct damage. Right now in terms of serious damage people run HgH grenades or HgH pistol. You basically stack might with elixers and just rip the person apart by applying constant Conditions of all types. Our only main physical damage option is called a Static Discharge build, and that doesn’t do a whole lot, but still is very effective.

Builds:

HgH build ft one of the best engineer players, Ostrich Eggs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Hx93LdkAOg

Basic Static Discharge Build:

My own builds besides those mentioned above…may not be the best but I get by with them.

Turret Build (not very viable, mostly use when messing around. I use this for open world stuff. Spread your turrets out. If they get destroyed your main attack is with toolbelt skills and SD. Try to repair with toolkit if needed. Keep your range. CC with Rifle to keep enemies away from your turrets):

Elixer/Bomb Support Build(You wont do a whole lot of damage, but still a good amount. Your condi removal and healing is off the chain. You will pretty much have none stop regen, AoE regen that is none stop, a ton of direct and pulse heals applied to an AoE radius, its really good. I dominate while bunkering with this and it is decent in Dungeons) :

Elixer Gun Build (This is mostly a build that revolves around applying support and damage via the Elixer Gun): http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-XRR;2Z-ku0o5NQFx0;9;49T-T-4;0376;116A;18s0;3dZm9fRk07ZI

I may just need to do that, I guess.

I really like both of these. I remember being a big fan of the Elixir gun. If it’s viable to play with, that’d be great. I’ll take this into consideration if I decide to roll an Engi.

Thanks.
