Q:
I’m a mesmer and reading the handbook guide on the forums, I was informed some people do not equip a weapon if it shows up in both weapon sets.
Mesmers equip Sword/Focus and Sword/Sword and the guide said to equip Sword/Focus and “Nothing”/Sword. I want to ask why you wouldn’t equip a sword instead of “nothing” for the sigil effect and stats?
Thank you

Because the sword mainhand from the first weapon set gets moved to the mainhand of the second weapon set when you swap. There’s no need to equip a sword in each mainhand slot because the sword would get swapped automatically; the same would apply if you were wanting to keep the same offhand for both sets.

Basically you use the same mainhand sword in both weapon sets and just swap the offhand.
If you want different stats or sigils for each weapon set then you will need to equip two mainhand swords, but if not this way is cheaper (especially if you’re using ascended weapons) and simpler.
It also lets you keep the same skin. Not such an issue now the wardrobe lets you use skins as many times as you like, but before that if you made a legendary sword you either had to use this method or only get to use it 1/2 the time.
If you equip an offhand sword, like on a Mesmer, you will need to have two different swords in your inventory. You equip the main set, say a sword/focus, and then in your inventory you right click the other sword and set it to equip in off hand. This will dump a copy of your mainhand sword into the secondary slot and fill the offhand with your other sword.
I hadn’t thought about using the same OH weapon before on my mesmer, so here is a question. If I use two different fuci (is that the plural for focus?) and I swap after creating a phantasmal warden and that skill is still in cooldown on the first focus will the phantasmal warden be in cooldown on my second focus as well?
The plural of focus is foci, close enough
And even if you have 2 foci equipped the CD will remain after you swap, so it is better to just have 1 since it will be half the price and even if you have an “on swap” sigil in the weapon, it will trigger.

oops.

Thanks.
