This may be a dumb question.

I have never looted an exotic. I have 2 level 80s characters. The only exotics I have are from completing high level maps. Never looted one. I have been fairly fortunate and I have been able to equip about half of these and the ones I couldn’t equip I sold for enough gold to buy exotics I could use.

But I can’t help but feel I am doing something wrong. I play most of my time in Cursed Shore/Malchor’s Leap. I do lots of events, generally have a good time. I don’t generally play WvW or dungeon instances due to a sub-optimal gaming PC (my framerate in WvW is less than 1 FPS, same in most dungeons).

Do exotics drop from random mobs? Am I just unlucky? Is there something else I should be doing?

Yes exotics do drop from random mobs and yes you’re just unlucky. I played since BWE2, until now I have only gotten 1 exotic out of a random mob(non-champ nor vet) and 2 out of chests(not from dragon champs). They do drop, but the chances are slimmer than a starved jackalope.

I have 6 80’s and have not gotten an exotic drop, although I haven’t farmed in quite a while.

Same here, I have not seen an exotic drop yet, and I barely see rare drops. Most or my rares have come off of Random mobs, even in a low level zone out of a chest. I can farm in 80 zones and get nothing, do one event and bang a rare. Go figure

This is just me speculating, but I find that you have better chances of getting better loot if you fight enemies that are tied to an event. Also, I find that I get better loot the higher the level of the enemies in the event I am fighting (lvl 80 vs. say lvl 84). Finally, I find I get better loot in a party.

More on topic, I think it is pretty normal to rarely get exotics from loot drops. I have gotten 3 (I think) exotics from purely enemy drops, most of mine have come from the Mystic Forge (though many, many yellows have been eaten in the process).

Yes, I forgot to mention that the first of my 3 exotic drops came from beating another player in wvw.

Exotics can drop, but most players seem to get them by crafting them, buying them, or trading dungeon tokens for them.
