Here and there I’ve run across a challenge or situation where I have earned an extra trait point. Is there a list of ways to obtain extra trait points in game? I’ve had no luck with the Wiki.

I’ve never seen this happen on any of my characters – there are only 70 trait points you can get for each charcater you play – one for each level between 11-80. Do you mean skill points? These are earned through levelling and through completing skill challenges scattered around the maps.

You gain one trait point each time you level up after 10 only, that means you will have 70 trait points at level 80, there is no other way to get traits. What you probably mean are Skill Points which you earn by finishing skill challenges that are all over the PVE world.

And if you did mean skill points, I believe the only current ways to obtain them are from leveling (even filling the exp bar at 80), those challenges in the world and that item from the fractal vendor.

Now, via your statements, I see what must have happened to give me the mistaken idea. I must have leveled while completing a skill challenge – I saw the trait shield on screen but didn’t realize I’d leveled (big battle).
