Q:

Hi,

I just bought the game 2 days ago, so don’t know a whole lot about it yet.

Before I level up my first character I was just wondering whether it is first worth levelling up a character just for farming (one that is good solo against PvE, e.g. a warrior or engineer from what I have read)?

Then once I have plenty of gold, level up the character (faster because I would be able to afford to do a lot of crafting) I want to use for PvP/ that I will enjoy playing more/ is better to my style of PvP. (I am aware that as soon as you go into PvP you level up to 80? But I will still need to have plenty of gold to afford good gear for PvP?).

Would be interested to know your opinions/ confirm my understanding of things is correct.

Thanks

I would suggest just playing what you want. You will gradually start earning gold and should have a small pile to start with at 80.

most farming is done in zergs or dungeons.
In zergs it doesnt matter at all what you are, as long as you can hit the enemy you get the loot. In dungeons you need a class that you can play well and fits you.

So bottom line, you don’t really have to solo farm in this game so pick a class that you like.

If you want a character for pvp you can start pvp with a brand new character. You are automatically Level 80 in pvp with all your skills. If you want a character for WvWvW then you would have to level up a char and gear him to be most effective.

War, Guard

Really, the versatility between solo and group is not much better than these.

Mesmer and Ele are nice as well but when you find yourself on your own, it’s just not aa powerful, as these classes has gimmicks (Mesmer Timewarp) and mechanics (Ele Might stacking and Fury) that power you and your allies up, but due to being maximum squishy (which you will be as you graduallu advance to Zerk stats; more DPS = faster kills = more farming) you will be somewhat reliant on your party members to draw attention from you so you don’t get downed when a boss blows you a kiss.

If you have a preference to pure offense or pure defense, as far as utilities go, War is on the offensive side (Banner of Discipline, For Great Justice, On My Mark), and Guardian for the defensive side (Wall of Reflection, Merciful Intervention, Purging Flames). Look up each and see whose utilities you’d prefer more, imo.

Guard: Driveby Brofist; Warrior: Giganticus Elitist

You get PvP armor by playing PvP, and that armor is for looks. When you go there (crossed swords top left of the UI) you will be level 80 with access to all traits and skills with a starter set of gear. Venders there will give you more starter gear and you buy more than that with PvP currency, glory.

PvP armor can’t be used in PvE and PvE armor can’t be used in PvP.

Pvp armor are free, pve armor are forbidden in pvp. And so is every piece of equipment. Everyone start equally, you even get all your skill and trait unlocked for you. But what’s in PvP stays in PvP.
So if you plan to be only PvP, don’t even bother with PvE. Though, in WvW, you use your PvE stuff.
