I’ve been playing GW2 over a year now but haven’t really posted in the forums yet. Now I have a question I can’t find the answer for. Anyway, I understand that the new trait system will make Grandmaster available at 80 and Major traits will be locked, except for existing characters but excluding new traits. Now, my Mesmer is level 59 and will be 60 before the update. If I buy and use a manual before the update, will I have access to Grandmaster 60-80 after the update or will I have wasted 2 gold? Thanks in advance.

The manuals will become obsolete and are removed from the game after the update. Personally, I would not be willing to spend 2 gold for a short-term benefit (if there is any).

While I cannot answer your question, I do not believe that grandmaster traits are that good to pay 2 gold in order to use them for 20 levels. (Although I don’t even know if it will work that way.)

Final advice: If nobody knows the answer to your question, don’t buy the manual. Worst case, you will have paid 2 gold for a benefit that disappears immediately after the patch.

I also would not buy the manual. Everything is changing.

I may have misunderstood but the way I interpreted it is that after the patch you won’t need manuals, the new traits will unlock automatically.

I’ve been avoiding buying manuals since the blog post went up, because it sounds like it’s going to be a waste of money.

My understanding is that the manuals will no longer be needed, but will be replaced by a yet un-detailed system of unlocking trait skills (similar to the way GW1 unlocked specific skills, but i don’t think there will be an NPC to sell ALL of them like in GW1). I was under the impression that some will be easily obtained via story rewards (possibly some NPC vendors) while others will require additional effort to hunt down and earn them in some manner.

This is basically going to add another dimension to leveling and building a character from the ground up and I’m sure some will love it and (very likely) some will hate it.

Also, they mentioned that this will ONLY effect characters with currently unlocked trait levels in terms of any newly released skills and this patch will also release a new Grandmaster trait skill for each attribute line.

Of course, I could be reading it all wrong but am content to find out tomorrow.

I’m aware trait tiers will be automatically unlocked, I was moreover unsure about if I were to unlock Grandmaster at 60 before the patch, whether they would lock again until 80 after the patch or if the patch would only affect characters who haven’t unlocked that tier yet. Seems everyone else is as unsure as I am, so I guess I’ll tough it out until 80 just to be safe. Thanks, guys!

I think that the update said that existing unlocked traits won’t be locked. It might be a bit of a gamble that it will be cheaper than 2 gold to unlock all those traits, I bought the manual yesterday, as I figure it will be about the same expense either way.
