Generally I hate these help me choose a class posts but I need help choosing a class lol. I have pretty much narrowed it down to a Warrior, Engineer or Elementalist. I am really looking to focus on pvp and wvw. I pretty much want to be able to dish out damage and be self sufficient for the most part (roaming, 1v1, etc). From the research I have done Warriors seem to be able to roam and do heavy damage, I have read a lot of people saying contradicting stuff about Engineers except that they are the most difficult class to play and I have no clue about an Elementalist. I was hoping anyone could shed some light onto these classes or even if I am going in the wrong direction and there are better classes that suit what I am looking for in pvp/wvw.

Any will be fine and no, engie is not the most difficult class to play.

If you want WvW, then the main difference will come from whether you want to bring it into the zerg without swapping class from the solo run. Engie is pretty much a no-go. Its one of the undesirables (rangers, thieves, engies). Ele is locked down as support, which is fine if you like that. Warrior is one of those that you only need to bring res banner on to be assumed to be “usefull”.

Of course, you dont even need to choose. Make them all.

I will also vouch for Engineer here, having a successful one as my main now. The learning curve is a little steep, but by no means is it the most difficult. I would probably pin that down on Mesmer if opinion of self is concerned.

Most of the Engineer’s flex comes with the tool belt and kits. What you put down as your utility skills determines what you have on your tool belt skills. And the right utility/tool belt skills work well in the right situations. But don’t let that jumble confuse you. It’s alright if you pick and stick to a single kit (or two, if you use the elite mortar kit down the road); I find that grenades are great for when you’re leveling up as well as in endgame material, esp. with the right traits you can stack some impressive bleeds as well as some occasional burning + burst burning (toolbelt flamethrower = next 3 hits inflict burning, and that’s one throw of grenades!)

What WvW is looking for is those who can A→B without losing function, and unfortunately that’s where Engineer kinda lacks. But outside, when metas, dungeons and general PvE is concerned, it’s fine.

But as for your question, any class is viable if you work well at it. Give Engineer a try down the road if you’re pinned to it. You might like it, you might not; you won’t know if you don’t try.

Something something Autechre fanatic.

All of the professions are capable of all of that, but they have their restrictions from build to build. Ele is better if you plan to have allies around all the time, since their DPS build is very squishy and their tankier builds are more focused on team support. Engi is pretty versatile but not as good when it comes to zerging in wvw. Warriors can faceroll through pretty much anything so if you want something that’s easy and more forgiving then that’s a good option.

I’d think that you wouldn’t be able to choose between the three until you’ve tested all three in PvP.

You’ve got multiple character slots – so try all three.

The professions are balanced well enough that all 9 professions are at least reasonable in competitive formats. The only 2 I’d be iffy about are necro and revenant.

So rather than picking one based on what they can do, since everyone can do everything, I’d just pick the one you enjoy the style of the most. If nothing else, pick it based on the armor weight appearance choices.

Or make all 3. Especially for PvP, you don’t have to do anything to get them competition ready. Level 2 is fine.

Thanks everyone for the help! I think I will end up trying every class, I was just wondering which would be an easier yet effective one to jump into as a new player.
