First character
6 80s in different professions that I play regularly. Define main?
There’s no need for an initial rough play-through because unlike a lot of games (single-player RPGs in particular) you can’t really do anything wrong while levelling up.
You will eventually get enough skill points to unlock every single skill and you can re-do your traits and equipment at any time* so even if you do make a bad choice, or change your mind on what build you want, you don’t need to start over. A lot of the content is repeatable and the stuff that isn’t you’ll only complete if you do it right so nothing to worry about there either.
*Before anyone corrects me on this I’m aware you have to go to a retrainer in a city to change your traits. When I say you can do it at any time I just mean you don’t have to wait until you’re a certain level, or do a special quest to unlock the option or whatever and you’re not limited to a few uses.
The only reasons I can see for your first character to reach 80 not being your main are if you change your mind on what profession you want to play, or if you find one more fun to play in open-world PvE and so level them faster but find you want to use another one as your main for other aspects of the game.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Don’t worry about who will be your main; when you’re just starting out, you have a long way to go before you have any really significant decisions to make regarding end game armor or weapons. Pick a character class and play it for as long as it interests you, and if you’re just not feeling it, start another character. The best way to identify what playstyle suits you is simply to try on a few different classes and see what fits.
While I do have a “main” that I use for most Living Story stuff, dungeons, and for equipping with top-grade equipment, what really makes him stand out isn’t his equipment, but how experienced I am with his class. My alts wear relatively inexpensive gear, but I rarely, if ever, have trouble completing content with them, and then it’s because they just don’t feel as natural as my main, more than because of their equipment.
You can end up taking your first toon to 80 but maining a totally different toon at a later point. I started with a necro. Took it to 80. Put the game away for a while when it got impossible in Straights of Devastation. Rolled a warrior and have loved it. My warrior is my main and i now use my necro almost exclusively for WvW. Most times you have to play a class for some time before you can determine how well it synergizes with your play style.
Honestly ive found you’ll burn out on leveling 1 character by level 55-60 so swap between 2 with different play styles to keep game play fresh
You can also burn out on multiple characters between level 10 – 30. Because low level = not many things you can do.
Your main should be the class you enjoy and/or know how to play. My first character I played was an ele, my main ended up being a mesmer. Though my first ele was made during beta weekend 2 so there wasn’t enough time to raise it to 80.
