Hello!

I just hit level 80 with my first character. I’ve done a little WvW but I’m a little u sure of what comes next.

What should I be spending karma and laurels on? Any guides out there for the fresh 80s.

Thanks!

First thing I did when I hit 80 was dungeons. I wanted to collect all the sweet armor I could so people could admire how awesome I am :P

It’s a good idea to get a full set of level 80 exotic armor and any weapons you use. You can get them with badges of honour in WvW, karma from the temples in Orr, gold from the trading post, dungeons with tokens or craft them if your level is high enough. Or a combination of the above if you don’t have enough of one currency.

(If you’re not entirely sure on your build yet it might be worth thinking about it first. It’d be a shame to get a full set of gear and then realise you need a different one.)

Other than that it’s really up to you what you do. To me that’s the good thing about getting to level 80, it means you can just do whatever you want and not worry about if you’re the right level or if it’s going to give you enough XP or whatever.

When I got to level 80 the first thing I did was go to Southsun Cove, just because I’d been when it first came out (and you were up-levelled) but hadn’t been back since. Then I randomly decided to go and explore Diessa Plateau. But I also started working my way through the dungeons (which I hadn’t done before). I really should have started WvW too but I kept putting it off until just recently. It’s good fun.

Forgot to mention that I have 34 Laurels and about 86k karma.

Also, a friend made me a set of 6 exotic armor pieces, and I picked up an exotic Greatsword on the TP for a decent price.

Thanks again for the help!

From what I’ve been told, DON’T BUY ASCENDED GEAR WITH LAURELS, but buy the T-6 Materials to sell on, max a build, farm Fractals and earn the Ascended Gear from there with the Relics and/or get the odd rare drop. If you’d like, buy the 10 Unidentified Dyes! I bought a stack yesterday and got Abyss, which I’ve gotten 4/5 of the other times I’ve bought the stacks! It’s a pretty common drop rate which is weird.

As for the Karma… Keep it unless the Temple Armour at the Temple Karma Sellers in Orr takes your fancy… But it’s better to be on the safe side and keep the Karma Incase you decide to go for a Legendary, and the same can be said for the Laurels/T-6 Materials you buy with them

Sure if you like doing Fractals. Personally I’d rather pay to avoid it, so using Laurels on ascended gear is a pretty good deal for me.

Oh and you can also use Guild Commendations to get some. It costs 5g + the commendations but I think it’s cheaper than laurels + ecto.

Pretty much what Danikat said- at level 80, you pretty much just pick your own goals and go after them, or find what you like to do and do it.

Currently, I spend most of my time working with the newbies in my guild (and some outside as well), helping them level and giving them food, advice, and general encouragement. I also run dungeons with my friends when we’re all on and pitch in to help if their friends want a run. I also wander the world, doing events and talking to NPCs for fun and gathering everything (pretty much all of my money comes from dungeoning and gathering- I don’t do champ trains because I find the process dull and the company irritating, and I’m content making what I do make). I recently finished my first legendary ankitten ow working on a full set of Ascended armor (for the look, actually, and not the stats).

About the karma and laurels, I’d say save them if you want Ascended gear or a legendary. Neither legendaries or Ascended gear are required- you can very easily do 99.9% of the game in exotics, with the one exception being high-level Fractals (which has no special rewards and is more of a prestige/personal challenge thing). If you do want them, though, you will need the karma for obsidian shards and laurels for an Ascended amulet (the only way to get one atm) and recipes for Ascended armor and weapons. If you’re not interested in legendaries or Ascended, do as you see fit with them.

There is actually one other way – you can buy or make a Triforge Amulet and then use a Mystic Forge recipe to make it ascended. But that’s pretty expensive so to most people it’s probably not a good alternative.
