For those who pre ordered HoT...
You almost certainly will, but how much depends on where in the world you are.
If you’re in the EU then the tax is included in the price so you’ll only pay the price shown on the Buy Heart of Thorns page. If you’re in America then the tax is determined by your state and added at the end, you will be shown the amount of tax and the total price before you pay.
If you’re anywhere else then I’m not sure, but it will be the same amount and the same process as when you buy other games. The only time you wouldn’t have to pay tax is if you happen to be in a place which doesn’t charge sales tax/VAT/whatever they call it on games.

Um…no? I don’t remember any extra money being charged, but then again i’m on EU.
Yes, I bought the ultimate edition, and ended up paying around $106 and some change.
Nope, but then I live I the EU, so tax is in the price.

But what about for those who live in Texas?
I love questions like this.
The State of Texas is one of those that does NOT require an out-of-state retailer that lacks a physical presence in the state (examples: having a warehouse or office in Texas; having a sales rep based in Texas) to collect sales tax at point of purchase.
However, the State of Texas DOES require its residents who purchase such tax-free goods to pay a “use tax” on their purchase(s), IF the product purchased is used within the state’s borders.
If you paid taxes on your purchase from ArenaNet and you’re a Texas resident, it’s legitimate – while ArenaNet does not have a physical presence located in Texas, they are a subsidiary of a company that does: NCSOFT, which maintains an Austin office (probably to spy on Bioware).
If you did NOT pay taxes on your purchase from ArenaNet and you’re a Texas resident, though, I wouldn’t sweat it unless you bought stacks and stacks of HoT. Then the comptroller’s probably gonna have something to say about it. XD
Hope that helps! If it doesn’t, here’s a pile of further information on the topic:

My husband and I are in Texas, and we paid tax on the purchase. There you go.
Thanks!
Welp. Tried preordering. There’s a tax.
Out of curiosity, how much is your tax? Ours is 24%.

Mine was I think around 8.25%. 6.25% is the standard for internet purchase sales tax in Texas, and then certain areas (like ours) make you pay a local sales tax (up to 2%, I think).
Thanks!

Blame NCSOFT. Were it not for their Austin office, it would be a tax-free purchase – though, to be honest, it’s really not that big of a tack-on. Look at what Euros have to pay in taxes. -Sid

It’s 8.24% tax. So around USD $54.11 is what I have to pay.
For something minor (at least for me), I couldn’t believe that this thread got a lot of responses. Usually it’s a “tax” question and I thought that a few stragglers would point out the obvious “duh” and that’d be the end of that. But this entire question was about trying to buy the pre order with only my $50 gift card. It may not cover a lot… but I have other plans for me to get Heart of Thorns! xD
