Free to play and chat restrictions
I’m fairly sure that anything not listed can be used as normal. like say chat. that isn’t listed either, but I’m sure f2p users can use say chat. I’m assuming it’s the same for party and guild chat
edit: once they join your guild, make sure your friend has guild chat enabled in the chat options. I don’t remember if it enabled by default.

We invited him into our personal bank guild to test it out and went through the chat options to make sure he had everything checked that was needed but still no go. Of course, it is difficult to know that our explanation was good enough to get it across the phone lines to him. I just wanted to make sure it should or should not work before we keep trying. I don’t want to frustrate him with something that isn’t even supposed to work.
Thanks for the input.
Unless there has been a recent change ftp can use guild chat.
Garambola seeks sooth. I’m in two guilds that include FtP members and they could chat with us from the very beginning.

I know it sounds blatantly obvious but… did your FTP member represent the guild? Or did some of you not represent and didn’t have the “all guild chat” option active?
Just asking since we have an alliance with another guild and new members are often wondering to whom their guild mates are talking to in guild chat, since they can’t see what we write until they check a certain box.
Leader of “Servants of Balance” [SoB], a small guild endemic to the FSP.
Had the same issue with a guildmember a few weeks ago. He insisted in having everything checked over and over, so I decided to start from scratch with him once again. I cannot do guildmissions with a guy who cannot read guildchat :S. When we went through the procedure, we realized he forgot the important checkbox and had no clue what representation was ^^.
Back to topic/op. Two steps:
Bottom line, left to the type-in-box is the name of the chat [guild], [say], [map], etc. Just click there (left mouse button) and a list appears. The top 6 entries are of guild. /guild for the one you are currently representing. /g1 – /g5 for all the guilds you may have joined, to see and write in guildchat.
Also, when people are at the chat-window, go to any of the tabs you want to read the guildchat. Left of the name is an arrow down. Click on that arrow, check the box at Guild (2nd from top). When checked, use the arrow to the right, next to the word Guild and check all the guilds you want to read the guildchat in that tab.
After doing both steps, the problem should be solved.
Thanks, everyone. We will try going through all the steps again this evening. Now that I am sure he can see/use guild chat we will start over at the beginning.
Make sure you check absolutely everything. What seems simple and obvious to an experienced player can be highly confusing for a newbie, and it’s not always the same things the experienced people found confusing when they were new.
Here’s a checklist of everything I can think of:
1) Has he been invited to the guild?
2) Is he representing (you can check in the guild roster)
3) Does he have guild chat enabled?
4) Is it enabled for all guilds or only some?
5) Is he looking at the right chat tab? I think you get 2 by default – Main and Combat and the combat one won’t show any chat channels.
(A quick note on point 2: On my main account where I’m in 5 guilds I can talk to any of them, even if I’m not representing the guild I’m talking to. But on my free account if I stand down from the 1 guild I’m in I cannot use guild chat – it tells me I’m not in a guild. So it looks like while you don’t need to be representing the guild you’re talking to you do have to be representing a guild.)
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
As long as we’re going through the obvious, I’ll add 1a), has he accepted the invite to the guild? (Which you can check by seeing if he has the brown square by his name in your roster).
Thanks! We will go through all of this later today when we are all back in game.

You don’t need to be representing any guild to use guild chat but if you turn off all rep you need to use /g(1-5) again to be able to chat because prior to that you were in the /g channel which means “currently represented guild”.
Another question if I need to make another thread I will but trying here first…
Is there a way we can gift him the full version of the game and he can upgrade using the ftp account?

the only real way to gift him the game would be purchasing it, then sending him the code to add to his account.
the f2p account he is using can be upgraded using a purchased game code by logging in on the website with his gw2 login details (www.guidwars2.com >> services drop down menu >> my account), and clicking the redeem code link.
