Q:
Fresh 80's duo, whats the best things to do?
A:
I also recommend to just play around a little and get to know the game a bit better before venturing into Heart of Thorns. Here’s a few suggestions what you could do:
-Get full exotic gear, and optimize your builds. Getting full exotics is not expensive or very time-consuming, but very helpful in the end-game content. Also, you might want to check out Metabattle or some other sites to guide you on your character build. You don’t have to follow the metagame builds, but some traits underperform badly an are essentially useless, while picking something else might prove much more useful for you.
-Lower-level dungeons can be duo’d, but I recommend putting up an “all welcome” party in the LFG (Y button by default). If you don’t mind three strangers running them with you, dungeons are really fun.
-WvW is great fun for duos, if you don’t mind the PvP aspect. You can run as a duo scout team, flipping camps and towers, killing roamers and assisting in battles. Keep in mind, though, that WvW has a slight learning curve, and as new-ish players to your professions you will most likely get annihilated by experienced players.
-World Completion. The world is astonishingly beautiful, some of the quest hearts are really fun and then later on you will have all waypoints unlocked, which is incredibly useful.
-World Bosses. Check the timers on the GW2 Wiki (or any website made for this purpose), check out where they are going to spawn and when, and go have some epic battles with dozens of other players.
Welcome to Tyria!
Heart of Thorns, I would say.
After I reached lv.80 and finished main-story, I started with HoT to get important masteries and to play along the next chapter of my personal story.
Furthermore, you could finish exploring the map.
Those two ideas mentioned above can be played as a duo.
I would hold off on Heart of Thorns until I had more experience. Try World Completion, or, at least, completing all L80 Maps. You could unlock Living World Season Two, and play through that. You could play all Current Events available sans HoT. You could try out World vs. World. You could complete Achievements that appeal to you both. There is nothing, really, that two players can’t do together.
Good luck.
I’ll second the advice to get Living World Season 2. It’s the lead-in to HoT, both storywise and in difficulty; HoT is harder than Core Tyria, and it can be a bit of a jump. LW2 is a kind of midpoint.
You will also probably want to get it eventually anyway for the Mastery Points that HoT “retrofits” to several achievements in Core, so might as well play it in its intended “slot”.
Hevoskuuri’s summary is also excellent – get full exotics and dip your toes in a bit of everywhere!

I have a slightly different bit of advice.
At 80 do the intro story to HoT, this unlocks masteries.
Go into Verdent Brink and level up gliding you get 1 mastery point doing the story and most of the exp required for this (bottom right beside the exp bar is the easiest way to access what masteries you are working on and change where the exp goes if you want). The rest of the exp can be gotten doing events around the entry wp.
Leave HoT maps if you are enjoying yourself stay but…
Level up Pact masteries in core maps to get auto loot.
Do some fractals for exp and mastery points and cash.
See if you can duo low level fractals with your wife, just for kicks nothing else.
Ignore the above and have fun doing other things. All up to you two.
In my experience, the best thing for a fresh 80’s duo to do is release an album and make it big
In all seriousness though, I’ve been playing the game for 12 weeks and getting HoT for the new maps, elite specs and mastery tracks is definitely worth it.
From the point of story, it is best to buy (with gems) and play Living Story 2 before the beginning of HoT story.
At least you will be familiar with those new NPCs which you will meet in HoT story.
Thank you all, very helpful suggestions
Yeah the whole Masteries piece is nice.. just make sure you understand that there are 2 main tracks of them.. Maguuma (which is the 4 maps with HoT) and Central Tyria which is the core maps… the Central Tyria map that gets you auto looting is the first one to focus on along with the gliding and the bouncing mushrooms in the Maguuma track… and make sure you understand what gets you mastery points….
