Full server -- what to do?
Oh jeez! So I just decided to screw it and create my first character — but now its telling me that if I choose an initial home world I will have to purchase a world transfer!!
What?!
Its tell you that you will have to buy a world transfer if you want to change your home world late. you can also use the guesting system later. but you wont be able to wvw while guesting.
everyone should fear becoming mentally clouded and obsessed with one small section of truth.
You can only create characters on one server. That’s what that message is telling you. To change servers, you will need transfer to another home server.
However, currently, all transfers are free of charge (click server selection, and there is a transfer button). We do not know for how long though. So you can try transferring to where your friends are, or come to a consensus, and everyone transfer to one specific server.
Thanks for the replies Serraphin & Kal!
I read another post that suggested waiting until off-peak times, and then trying again.
Is there any substance to that? I kind of assumed they close off servers when character creation on those “worlds” reaches a certain point — would off-peak time’s make much difference?
I can’t really answer that… Since the game has no queues due to the overflow mechanics, I’m not really sure how they measure total population. If it’s concurrent population, then it’s definitely worth a try to transfer off-peak hours. Good luck!
From what I gather, the server goes from low to full based on current activity. Several of our guild members got the message that the server was full on the first or second day after launch, and each of them was able to join after a short wait (it can be as little as 30 minutes, from one case I particularly remember).

Thanks Kal!
I’ll try my luck — do you know how much world-transfers will cost in the future? It may be worth my time to start playing now if the cost is not too great. You know, just in case I miss my chance while the transfer period is free.
“Once server populations have largely settled and stabilized, world transfers will be restricted to once a week and cost a variable amount of gems based on the population of the world being transferred to: 500, 1,000 or 1,800 (for low, medium, or high population, respectively)”
From the wiki
Now that, though, seems to suggest the state of low/medium/high is more “set”, maybe they look at total number of players there? I can’t be 100% sure about how this server population thing works. I’m only speaking from experience with our members.

Yup! info here:

(under “Other Upgrades not sold in Gem Store”)
Price depends on how full the server is.
Except that does suggest that “Full” servers are not available choices for server transfers.
Seriously?! Only a few weeks after release, with very limited game stock, and already servers are full?!
Sadface :\
Thanks for all your help!
The game stock became “limited” only because of the overwhelmingly positive response to the game :P They honestly did not expect to sell so much so quickly. They actually had to go “hey, well… screw this, lets use some of this extra money to buy more servers and open up more realms coz we are losing money for every day we remain ‘Sold Out’”
I imagine as a result the servers are in a slight state of dissaray as friends try to group with friends, I too am underwhelmed by the “single server” thing, I dont get why we have to have a hub and cant place one or two characters per server (up to whatever the limit is)
Myself and a friend who are Australian are trying very hard to make an educated decision now, it is an even more serious choice for us because if we choose a server with 100% US population its going to be very dead later on during the hours which most of the Americans sleep xD
What I wouldnt give for an actual dedicated Oceanic server but no… we are not at that stage yet
