Agreed, I really enjoy my elementalist, and if you’re coming from an engineer I think you might enjoy it.

Failing which, having played a main elementalist I made a warrior and gleefully went around crushing things and not having to worry about dying for once!

Fun is what you make of it, and everyone’s opinion is different.

That being said, I found the thief to be fun with the right combo of weapons.

Elementalist are fun, but reports had been said they fold in half very quickly when hit. Meaning – Very Squishy.

Properly built, elementalists hold up very well. The consensus is, if you are into finger dancing, Elementalist is your class.

Not when specced and played right, they don’t. And I don’t even mean 30 in both Earth and Water with full defensive gear and a staff- I’m double daggers, 10 Air/30 Water/30 Arcana, with a balanced gearset, and can hold my own against five normal Risen and a veteran in Orr, and outsurvive other classes in dungeons. It’s just a different, more active kind of survivability.

You know better then I do, I never made an Elementalist. I am sure you could hold your own but how was it before you where 80? You don’t have all the point traits like you do now, a few said 20 -30 and on is a rough road and you die a lot being so squishy, do to lack of points, Not there fault, just the game designs fault. I also heard Elementalist got the nerf Bat along with Mesmers not to long ago.

drifter’s right on about ele’s being squishy and folding in half when hit. I picked ele as my first char’s profession, and while it’s been fun, the enemies were able to wipe up the floor with me on several occasions. I understand strafing is key while fighting, and I’ve been getting better at it, but when you’re up against multiple enemies, taking just a few hits means it’s over. As a new player, and with GW2 being my very first MMO, I’m starting to think I didn’t quite make the best choice for my first char. So… here’s a question: Since I have 4 more char slots available, I want my next char to be able to kick some major butt in fights. Out of the 7 remaining professions, which one would be my best choice??

@MiguelM
From my personal preferance. I like Warrior and Guardian. from level 1-80 it just is more manageable IMO, my 80 warrior and my 80 Guardian can take a few mobs on at once and survive.

If you are into hit and run go with theif and your secondary a shortbow, I only say shortbow do to it having a stealth arrow to let you gain some distance from the foe to get out of their aggro range faster, and in WvW battles guilds like to see shotbows on theives. but it is not a must, if you can manage with out a shortbow then that is good too. Mind you, theif was a rough road for me to get one to 80, but I made it happen.

If you are into magic users instead, go Mesmer, this is just my personal preferance. I tried necromencer, and my playstyle matched more on a Mesmer. It is your playstyle it is entirely up to you, whatever you feel comfortable with.

IMO Engineer is a great class too, but I think it takes a certain breed of person to have an all around great engineer. Same goes for rangers, and Elementalist. You can have awesome Engineers, Elementalist, and Rangers. depending on the player behind the keyboard. The guild I was in had an awesome engineer he played his class perfectly, he was an aussie to. I always liked the aussie’s.

So play what you think matches your playstyle, and don’t look back.

At level 38, I soloed the champion Separatist Leader and both champion wasps in the Fields of Ruin. (Not at once, though, lol.) I’ll agree, though, that the early levels of ele are rough, like mesmer. I didn’t have too many issues after changing to daggers and respeccing earth/water (was a pure staff and fire build before) at around 28, but the journey there was rough. I’m leveling my mesmer alongside a friend’s elementalist and am reminded of that whenever we get mobbed by bandits.

There’s also the issue of being pigeonholed regarding traits- I often tell new players who are having issues to go earth/water for survivability until later levels. You have less flexibility in that area. I personally feel the end result of leveling an ele was worth it, though.

Also, regarding the nerf bat… I haven’t noticed any significant nerfs, actually. There was one to the Evasive Arcana trait to prevent excessive comboing, but it hasn’t crippled me or any of the other eles I know.

Elementalist is super-fun, but in the early levels you’ll want to stick to Dagger/Dagger or Scepter/Dagger for survivability and put traits in water, earth, and arcana. I leveled with staff, and while it was fun, it was also very expensive. If you enjoy engineer and want something equally interesting and requiring thought about what buttons you press when and where you target, I would suggest elementalist.

My next suggestion would be thief, which if you build towards keeping your initiative rolling in will allow sufficient skill spamming in PvE. Then you can switch it up to a stealth build for PvP.

Finally, maybe give mesmer or necro a shot. Haven’t played them, so I can’t say too much about them.

I don’t know if any other class is as much “fun” as Engineer, having all those kits and turrets and elixirs…just seems like a blast (no pun intended). Fun is subjective.

Warrior lets you smash faces without worrying about dying much.
Ele is a finger-dancing ride, not hearty, but has a lot of styles.
Mesmer is the most unique imho, and might fill your need of a fun class.
Guardian is one of the most all around balanced classes, with most/all utility skills being useful (ie – more variety).

Engineer. Can be frustrating though…in a good way. All those kits and skills. What to use? What to use? You might argue that you need to be a bit cerebral…or annal to love the engineer. Maybe a bit of both.

Elementalists are always fun… I just started a Ranger, though, and I’m having a blast with that. I’m coming from a Guardian background, though – your Engineer is probably a lot more fun than a Ranger. I haven’t tried Thief, but it sounds like it might be a lot of fun as well.

Good luck!

I just wanted to point out that, if properly built / geared (as in getting the right stats on your gear, not having rares/exotics) Elementalists can be very survivable. Even while leveling I never had any problems on mine (after I learned how to play it correctly and what gear and traits to get, that is). You just can’t built them glass cannon and get away with it very easily, especially at early levels.

I’ve had no problem with a dagger/dagger fire elementalist, built like a glass cannon. I decided to go water late in the game though.

Honestly though, to the OP:
Try them out and play what you want. Everybody here’s got a different idea of what fun is, and it might not match yours.
