Well there is no standard attack in GW2…..just the Skill 1 auto-attack (that you can turn off as an auto-attack if desired). The attack sequence you describe from GW1 was one of the major changes from a conventional MMO to GW2 being more of a dynamic combat system. Being able to hit 2 keys and immediately start attacking an enemy (while having NO awareness of the battlefield itself) is one of the main complaints leveled at MMOs in general. With that and the TAB key, you can pretty much participate in a battle blindfolded (not that you would be overly efficient or dominating….you WOULD land some damage). I guess instead of hitting “SPACE” you should be hitting “1”….I’m sure you noticed that jumping up an down doesn’t do much damage to an enemy (just yourself).
On a side note, they have recently (since 10/15) changed how the targeting prioritizes enemies and the “target closest enemy” button (I think that’s the “C” command you are speaking of) was also prioritizes when it should NOT have been. I know the Devs have acknowledged this error, but I don’t think they have corrected it yet. MANY PvP / WvW players are quite upset at this goof and I can understand why. I have no idea if this is part of your confusion or not, but it kind of sounds like it might be.

I was a GW1 player as well. The combat is pretty different between the two. It’s always hard to learn new controls, but the more you play, the easier it gets.
You can also adjust what actions are performed with specific keys, allowing you to customize the controls, in the options menu.
Here are the presets, but you can change them to something more comfortable.

There is no auto-follow in this game, which is basically what C-Space was relative to GW combat, so get used to the change.
Since you have to me more active, I find it is just best to look at your target with your eyes and just run to them yourself; you can choose to spam C and target them when they’re close enough to be your C target, but you also don’t need a target to attack a foe. Many abilities you can just use and it will register the hit as long as you are in range.

There are also lots of skills that DO require a target and getting in the habit of attacking enemies that are not targeted will frustrate you when you use one of those skills in that situation. It is BEST to target your intended target from the start but you are correct that you CAN attack untargeted foes…..a good change in my opinion.

I thought that pressing Tab auto targets the nearest enemy
