Hi all,

I hit level 80 a while ago and shortly after I hit level 400 leatherworking. I was short on money so I decided to head onto World Completion. Now, after selling stuff on the Black Lion’s Trading Company, I finally hit around 20 gold so a 15 gold investment in my gear shouldn’t be a bad decision. Now I was wondering about the following: I see two types of armor in the crafting window interesting for Rangers. Valkyrie’s and Berserker’s. First off, I use Longbow and Greatsword/Torch. This question in no way evolves around my weapon choice (as there has been enough debate about it already). Second of all, I see that Berserker’s gear is based on power, precision and crit but that it clearly lacks vitality. On the other side, Valkyrie also misses some elements to increase my dps. Now I am wondering if I should combine these two gearsets by taking 3 pieces of each set.

This would be my gear to do dungeons and WvWvW. So I am looking for a nice way between sick dps and high vitality. I want to excuse myself for my potential ignorance or a potential mistake in anything I wrote. I am new to the Guild Wars 2 game, so I would appreciate constructive criticism.

Thank you very much in advance for your input.

I personaly would not go for full berserker gear simply because I don’t like dying. A dead ranger does a lot less DPS than a ranger with a bit lower crit chance! Maybe try 3 berserker, 3 valkyrie and get some stats you are missing from jewelry? You’re going to have to play around a little with this to find the right balance, I don’t think anyone can just tell you what is the best for your play-style.

You don’t need to spend 15g to be ready to do dungeons. Buy all L80 greens for a fraction of the price, or if you prefer buy all L80 yellows, you can get a full set for 2-5g on TP and then hit the dungeons with a vengeance. It doesn’t take long to farm for a full exotic set.

I started dungeons using all L80 green set from orr karma vendors and my warrior is now full exotics. So it can be done. I recommend not blowing 15g on L80 gear if you intend to do dungeons.

@tomceulemans

I just went though this over the weekend! lol!
My ranger (LB/GS) hit lvl 80 on Friday evening…

I spent most of Saturday & Sunday agonising over what armour to buy ….
I had been using all beserker kit since lvl 61 (blues), then up-graded to berserker (again blues) at lvl 72. I used accessories to fill the lack of toughness and vitality …

When I hit lvl 80, I looked at all the exotics and rares available for lvls 78-80 again and again. Unfortunately the prices don’t change the longer you stare at them …

For something different, I went to check the karma armour vendor in WvW. I had enough karma for a full set of lvl 80 ‘greens’, These have some of the protection stats you might be interested in, but have lower base defense stats.

Last evening, I finally made a decision and bought a full set of Beserker exotics. Cost me 12 gold. Between saving while leveling and selling some gems, I managed to scrape up 21 gold.

The beserker kit looks nice as well, so need to transmute, however all my slots are empty. Filling these with exotic runes (6 activations) will cost another 12 gold, so this will need to wait for a while.

I also craft leatherworking, currently lvl 290. I plan to get to lvl 400 so I can craft the Berserker exotics and then sell them on the TP. Hopefully this will return the gold investment I made in this kit ..

I also up-graded my longbow and greatsword to exotic as well …

Not sure if helps you, but at least you know you are not the only one going through this …

Thank you all for your fast response.

First off, Ebs, you’re right that everyone has a different playstyle and that I should even them out a bit in order to get a bit of all the stats. But I was wondering if there was a “set bonus” when you wear all of one set?

Second, Bluestone, you’re right that I could get about the same gear a lot cheaper. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t get a response of “Well if you put 100 gold in on the Black Lion’s Trading Post you’re going to be fine”. I would like the gear to be multifunctional: same gear for both dungeons and WvWvW. Or do you say I should buy cheap gear to do dungeons, grind my gear and then do WvWvW? Because as far as I know, and my knowledge is very restricted, in order to even get in a group you need to be “full exotic”.

Third off, bri, I also tried to upgrade my gear to the Karma gear sold in the last level 80 area. But I don’t seem to have a high damage output… There goes my Karma haha. So now I want to upgrade it and I had not seen a post like this so I decided to ask this terrific and fast-responding community.

Thank you all for your constructive criticism.

For as far as Khezekiah Bellamy goes, I obviously meant sword. I excused myself for possible mistakes, and thank you for pointing it out. Sadly I can’t point to that statement as “being constructive”.

Nevertheless I thank for the comments already made and hopefully I get more input from others.

I personally went Berserker’s on my Ranger and haven’t had too much of a problem with dying. The only time I die is if I’m stupid and position myself incorrectly. I crit hard and crit often and I love it. Longbow hits at max range can drop a damage-built enemy in 3-4 hits. Mmmm…

Best advice I can give is go to heart of the mists and test out the different stats distributions on golems and sPVP. No, sPVP isn’t totally representative of dungeons or WvW, but it will give you a good feel for what the sets will do and how you might want to adjust, especially for survivability.

Only downside is becuase PVP uses the amulets, you can’t make an equivalent to having half of one set and half of another.

Well I run WvW even on my new toons so they obviously don’t have exotics let alone L80 gear. The character I am currently working on was leveled from 10-20 just in WvW. But my server (Blackgate) has been dominating the last few matchups so it may be trickier to get much done on other servers.

So what I meant was buy L80 masterwork gear for coin or karma and then do your dungeons for exotics while at the same time mixing it up with WvW.
