Q:

I am currently at one month of playing and I still don’t have what you would call “main” character. But later about that. I have more pressing concerns.

In human starting zones(Queensdale+Kessex Hills) I can’t find anything to keep up the pace. Compared to Wayfarer Foothills it is slow as a snail and it even has tracts of terrain where there is NOTHING-well maybe some creep or like that. Again, Wayfarer guide you from one place to the other in a “groundpounding” rhytm-that’s what I like. Then again I like humans but the zones are so drab. Are they really so badly designed(haven’t tried Charr or Asura starting zones, Caledon Forest is ok)?

In general in PvE I tend to just get stuck and keep doing nothing. I feel like cutting of quests is a bad decision(they should’ve just thinned them). Hearts are ok, but they should work with quests and not without them. DEs->I don’t really like them. They just keep repeating over and over and over again. Nay, they are really bad replacement for quests->they provide just bare context instead of ample descriptions of quests. I LOVE to read and to imagine, I do not like this experience yourself cr@p. Must be personality issue.

What follows when I get stuck is I must basically grind crafting or go do Hearts that are above me(PvP does not interest me in mmos). I should be doing content of my level and not above or below my level. Nay, I feel that ANet has LOOOONG way to go concerning PvE. Is really drab.

Lack of grouping(I don’t consider those DE gimmicks grouping) also bothers me very much. I feel like just another DPS, no matter what I spec into. That the skills are balanced around sPvP doesn’t help either(use of PvE/PvP skill split would be justified here->I don’t want to have skills that inflict 3s of daze with no dmg on a 30+s recharge->that’s just stupid).

Concerning classes:

I like mobility, fortitude, condition damage and depth of combat. Versatility is good to have as well. Melee and come and hit me! is a big no no. I don’t care if the class is currently UP or OP(well I don’t want OP, UP is ok). Are my Norns good match(Ranger, Engineer and Elementalist)?
If so, any other advices(what to try next and what to avoid)?
I have thief but he is the epitome of skill and agility(Black Powder doesn’t hurt either) and I like him.
Then again I like Knights, hm(maybe I should be Knight in essence and not in form?)…

I’d like you to concentrate on the first issue the most. Because I can’t find this PvE enjoyable. Without that I can’t play MMORPG. Second part is optional since I have my norns so I am ok. I’d like to hear your thoughts there as well. Overall I like this game, but some segments are really drab and even subpar to the standard MMO tropes.

Thank You!

Come on! Help me out will ya?

With the waiting for the patch and all that, your advice could be what’ll keep me in the game. Ponder your words carefully.

I can’t really give you advice on the class choice. However, regarding levelling, it encompasses hearts, DEs and crafting. I’ve levelled 4 toons (3 were human) and I had absolutely no problem with keeping the pace level-wise, even in Queensdale and Kessex Hills. I did hearts, events as they popped up and levelled 2 professions on each. Every time I ended up as level 18 out of Queensdale and level 32 out of Kessex Hills (thus, overlevelled).

Don’t disregard DEs, as they are quite important (a gold medal will usually give you 10-15% of a level, not including the mobs you kill and people you ressurect during the DE). 10 events are already one level… and you need 5 for daily achievement anyway.

I do DEs but they don’t seem that important and they are repetitive as hell. In quests I get at least some context meanwhile in DEs you get to run around like a headless chicken killing stuff. I don’t know-I liked PQs the most and even the rifts were better(imo). PQs+quests=godly. Just Pqs=uhmmm k(whatever) shrug. I always leave the starting zone in levels 16-17. Tho my thief was just 14 when out of Queensdale.

Who knows-maybe this whole game is not for me?

Any further input?

If you like Wayfarer Foothills, why don’t you go there for leveling with your human? You do not have to do the human area, you can choose to start everywhere (after you finished your tutorial).
Sometimes it works out that you level enough by completing an appropriate zone, sometimes not. If not, choose another area in your level range and go there.

For grouping you might join them?

They really love to help out new players and will welcome you. :-)

I have a norn ranger and it is great.
But otherwise I play every profession, so I have a lot to choose from everyday. I like them all, they are different and some are really easy to level (especially warrior) and some not (mesmer, ele), but the best thing for you would be to give every profession a try. Play them all and look how they feel for you.. then decide if they feel alright or not.
Doesn’t hurt you to try them all out.
And try every starter area, you might find one, that you enjoy more than the human one. ;-)

All right!

I’ve HAD IT with perceiving cr@p! Time to bring out Judgement!

GW 2 is a prototype and that it will remain. Too many half-arsed things. Too many broken promises. Grouping and loot are basically non existant unless you tryhard. I relish people looking at me in awe because I have Purple weapon, not this half arsed communistic cr@p. I AM LEFT WING, but what is too much is too much kitten

Shame on me for allowing the emotions to get a hold on me. And shame on Arena Net for outright lying about their product! The product that is for 14-18 year old kids! No gore. No maturity. Cabbage people and ugly gnomes(at least they were scary n ugly in GW 1). No loot. No Sense of accomplishment. Only Total carebear attidute. Meh…

Perhaps I’ll be playing something else…

Welcome to the game, Gorwe and sorry to hear you’re having issues with the PVE as for some styles it works well but can take some getting used to after other games with quest hubs etc.

Some points that might help :-
1) If an NPC waves at you they often want to speak to you and may start you off on a QUEST. There are no quest icons above heads ofc so it’s often easy to miss extra quests but if you pay attention to NPC’s you meet or hang about after you help someone they may have another mission to help with etc.

2) The game seems to want to move us along so staying in same area and redoing hubs/DE’s is a bad idea due to diminished returns etc. Move on and explore the out of the way places – sometimes a hidden area may have treasure, a vet or champ (eeek) mob etc.

3) Jumping puzzles – these are anywhere and had to notice unless you’re curious but if you notice strange rock formations etc there may be a jumping puzzle to complete and a reward perhaps at it’s end.

DEs do have stories and contexts, but to see them, you have to stick around and pay attention (and to be fairly blunt, Queensdale is terribly bland storywise- all you do is feed livestock, escort caravans to Beetletun, and kill bandits/bad things with four legs). For instance, in the Asura area, there’s an event in which you must defend an encampment of survivors from the Inquest, who will kidnap a number of people there. This leads into another event where you follow a rescue team through a series of underground tunnels and a hidden Asura gate into an Inquest lab. After you rescue everyone, the krewe will search the lab and discover a strange device that they will take back to the encampment, in the face of Inquest resistance, culminating in a battle with a mega-golem.

Also, you can have people stare at you in awe for having a purple weapon- get a legendary. I’ve had a large number of people whisper me to compliment my armor alone. Loot sucks right now as a low-level; in higher levels, you’ll have rares, expensive crafting materials, and even exotics drop for you.

And as for what you say about carebear attitudes and communism? I played a gear-heavy, stat progression game a while back, and a good many of the “elite” people there were all stats and no substance. I, firsthand, saw them backstab their own guildmates for a shot at a few more numbers and abandon their friends to chase after that pretty purple gear. I know at the very least that I won’t have to worry about their sort destroying my guild here, nor will I have to worry about pouring hundreds of hours and dollars into a game so I won’t get shafted by other people because of a number. Call it what you want, but you find your own way here, make your own reputation, create your own niche, and it’s all determined by your attitude, skills, and actions, not some gear crutch.

Thanks for the advices. I don’t feel like testing a prototype, but I don’t have anything better to do, so I will stay. How drab and wretched my Life must be when I am forced to play a game I don’t even like(twitch based cartoony cr@p). Meh…

I find you amusing. You should be in the stand-up comedy business. However, since you’re still playing, I guess the case is closed

I don’t understand what you’re saying about no grouping and no loot. The grouping in low level zones has been fine for me, and what kind of loot do you expect at that level? Make sure to talk to the Heart guy after you’ve done the Heart, because he will sell you good gear for Karma.

What gore were you actually expecting? IMHO, the races are well done, and the Personal Story is likewise, very entertaining. I don’t know what you were expecting here. Not much Gore in other MMOs either.

Cheers.

Talking gore – Indeed, it’s not up there with Age of Conan’s head lobbing and other fatalities or the WoW simple mod that add blood splatters to your screen but if you look you’ll notice rather nice gore splatters of blood on armor after battles or in your personal story – perhaps most visible on heavy armors but it’s blood splatters.
