General explanation of skins please
using transmution stones u can put the look of a certain itom onto another item. I never done it so i cant answer the onther questions.
To copy the appearance of one item to another item you use transmutation stones.
You can get transmutation stones from the gem store or from completing a map 100%.
Basic transmutation stones are for L1-79 items.
Fine transmutation stones are for any items but save them for L80 items.
To transmute an item:
- Double click a transmutation stone (or right click it and select use). This will open the transmutation window.
- Drag the item with the stats you want into one side of the transmutation window.
- Drag the item with the skin/appearance you want into the other side of the transmutation window.
- Click the desired skin/appearance in the transmutation window. This will slide your option into the center, removing the unwanted skin/appearance.
- Click the desired item stats in the transmutation window. This will slide your option into the center, removing the unwanted item stats.
- Click the desired upgrade in the transmutation window. This will slide your option into the center, removing the unwanted upgrade. (You still need this step even if neither item has upgrades slotted).
Click Done or Transmute or whatever the submit button is called.
Equip your transmuted item.
Yep you have to use transmutation stones. It’s pretty easy to use. Basically once you use the stone, a window pops up and asks you to drag two items in it. Once you do, you have three options. The first one, is the skin, just click on whichever one you want to have. The second is the stats, choose the one with better stats (obviously), and the third option will be the rune you want to have, if either of the items have a rune on it already.
So yes, your two items are kind of merged into one, and yes, the resulting skin is re-usable.
Ok cool!
One more question: can I use skins of items that are higher level than I am?
I think you caaan use skins of a higher level, as long as you take the stats and level requirement of the lower level item. I think. I’ve personally never tried but theoretically you should be able to.
You can use high-end skins and transmute onto low level armor — I’ve done so several times. But I am having a problem doing that with the exotic Duelist armor (which is the PvP medium armor named Leather (1)). On the talk page link on the wiki page for transmutation, this comment had been added:
- I was going to give a particular example of what doesn’t work and left me scratching my head as to why. I had a 46-rare boot with an aug I no longer wanted but the boot was still the best I’d seen up to that point. I had a 6-stat set rune (GW2 has set runes rather than set gear) that I wanted to put in it. Trying to apply the rune atop the old one did not work so I figured maybe transmutation would do it. Eventually it worked (about the 6th repeat try) but up to that point, when I’d get my selections finished (same ones that eventually worked) it would say:
“stat item cannot use that upgrade”
and I’d just have to back out. Never figured out if, or what, I did differently to get it to work but it did eventually take my choices and I completed the transmutation.
So the short story is: there may be some bugs, if you’re pretty sure it should work, keep trying. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Whroc of Ehrmy Bay (talk). **
Has anyone run into this problem, or know if there’s a way around it? It seems like Whroc of Ehrmy Bay got around it through perseverance, but even he/she was confused as to what was done differently the 6th time around.

My thief transmuted the duelist armor (that exact set you’re talking about) onto lower level armor. What I found to work was using a low level armor piece that had runes. For my thief at level 30, this was a coat with some runes of Melandru. For a blue quality item, I’d get that “stat item” error.
For a blue quality item, my guess is that the transmutation threw out an error when trying to upgrade a piece that didn’t have runes, with a high level piece that did. When the low level piece had runes I could choose, it was fine with discarding the high level upgrade. If that makes any sense.
Thanks! I added on the Rune of Life to the low-level armor pieces, and voila, everything worked out perfectly!
