Getting Geared up
You can get much, for some people, most, of your exotic gear through karma, which you should have in modest supply at 80. They’re acquired through vendors at the Temples in Orr.
Here’s a very useful link showing what exotic gear can be acquired through what currency and in what kinds of stat allocation: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats
Regarding your backpiece question, exotic ones can also be acquired at the Temples through Karma. You can also craft ascended ones for an obscene amount of money. I don’t suggest that until you have a wild excess of money.
Lastly, if you’re allergic to PVE as I am, you can also gear through the badges in WvW. Some of it is available entirely through badges, most through badges and a little bit of gold.
You’ve heard of citadel of flame yes?
I have never done citadel of flame.
The back pieces have so little contribution to stats that you won’t notice the difference between the rare and the exotic versions (it’s less than 10 points of stats difference). You might as well get a very cheap (1.5 to 5 silver) lvl 80 rare back piece:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Backbrace
All of the dungeon ones (Charred Back Warmer, Fiber Splice, Spineguards) have a cheap level 80 rare version – no graphic but it has the stats and can accept a level 80 upgrade component. I wouldn’t get an exotic or ascended back brace until everything else is exotic.
The two posts above me explained your armor acquisition, so I won’t repeat.
As for farming locations:
- Citadel of Flame Explorable Path 1: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Citadel_of_Flame_%28explorable%29
- Lone Post: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Escort_the_Pact_squad_to_the_conservatory
- Cursed Shore: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pact_Operation_Southern_Advancement
- Harathi Hinterlands if T3/T4 materials are selling high: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Seraph_Assault_on_Centaur_Camps
I’m too impatient to farm for hours on end, so I’ve listed these in relatively the most to least efficient. Cursed Shore vs Lone Post are debatable because Cursed Shore requires more running / dodging red circles while Lone Post can still be done 1/3 awake if there’s enough people with you.
I have never done citadel of flame.
CoF Path 1 is a favourite for farming because it’s quick and can be done relatively “mindlessly” by simply speccing for attack and beating on everything with melee. (Most of the CoF P1 builds are built around the assumption that the battle will end before the boss gets a chance to kill you.)
You can see the video guides if you want, under CoF: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/Video-Guides-To-all-Explorable-Mode-Dungeons/page/2#post518838
This is a great guide for tackling your gearing-up choices. God bless Dulfy
