Q:
Trying to get my Gliding and very confused.
Picked up L80 (Woot!)
Started the Hart of Thorns storyline
Completed the Prologue and Torn from the Sky
I now have the following instruction: "Return to the jungle to earn masteries. Earn your Glider Basic Mastery to continue your story.
So I exited the story (had just started the 3rd chapter), my current location is the Verdant Brink. In my Masteries log it says my Mastering Rank for Gliding is at 61% and that I must complete it to finish the story.
Great! So where do I go or how do I initiate the training???
Thanks!

Basically you need to do anything that gives you experience points, but only within the HoT maps.
This can be a bit frustrating at first as Verdant Brink is tricky to navigate without gliding, but it doesn’t take long. Your best bet is to watch for an event chain (there’s one that starts just south of the map entrance where you help the Pale Reavers and one that starts north west of the entrance helping the Hylek) and follow that. If I remember correctly neither of these require gliding.
I also strongly recommend unlocking Advanced Gliding as soon as you can as that allows you to stay airborne much longer which makes a lot of gliding-related activities easier. Although there are 2 or 3 other points where you have to unlock a specific mastery (always the first one in a track) to progress the story, so those will probably have to come first).
Open your hero panel (default hotkey H). The lowest option on the left-hand side should be masteries. Choose that to open the mastery menu. Alternatively you can left-click to the right of your experience bar (the line at the very bottom of your screen) to open this.
Once on the masteries menu, you have a choice between Heart of Thorns (or is it Heart of Maguuma) and Central Tyria (Pact Tyria?) mastery lines. Choose Heart of Thorns, then Gliding, and you’ll see a bar about 2/3 filled (the same one you see as experience bar at the bottom of your screen).
To fully fill that bar, just go out into the expansion maps and do whatever you’d do on other maps to gain experience: play events, kill mobs, harvest, uncover the map, resurrect players and npc and so on.
When the bar is full there’ll be a quick flash (easy to miss) and in the mastery menu you’ll be able to spend a mastery point (you should’ve gotten one for completing Torn from the Sky) to unlock the basic gliding mastery. From there, you can choose the next Maguuma mastery to explore (either updraft in gliding or bouncing mushrooms in itzl) and so on.
Whenever you go back to the old tyria maps you’ll no longer gain experience for Maguuma masteries but for pact Tyria masteries instead, so make sure to choose a mastery to train from each area.
Check the wiki for more information.
Maybe it’s important to note as well:
Gliding is a HoT mastery > As such only exp earned WITHIN the jungle counts to the track.
You cannot level HOT masteries in Core tyria,
Nor can you level Core masteries in HOT maps
That’s really disappointing – I was expecting instanced glider training – like a progressive tutorial & obstacle course kind of thing.
So when I fill the mastery bar, they will just pop out on their own when I jump while falling, or will I need to equip them somehow?
Thanks!

Not quite.
1. Select the mastery in your mastery catalog to begin accumulating EXP for this track.
2. Earn the necessary mastery points (indicated by green suns on the map and in the achievement list)
3. Once the masterybar has filled up, you need to pay to the amount of masterypoints as indicated (I think the first one is just 1 or 2 points)
4. You will be rewarded with a basic glider (which is already unlocked) and you can press jump while falling to deploy it (and jump again to disable it)
There’s not really any need for training in using the glider, it’s pretty simple.
You jump from a height (it doesn’t have to be very high but flat ground won’t work) and either hold down the jump key or press it again while in the air and the glider opens. Then you use normal movement controls to move around.
There are some things which require practice, like judging whether you can glide between two points (it’s not powered flight so you can’t go up and you’ll be losing height all the time you’re in the air, unless you train updraft use and go into an updraft), but I think it’s easier to learn that through regular practice (which you will get, gliding quickly becomes a habit) rather than having an actual tutorial for it.
You can also fill your Gliding Mastery bar in Ember Bay, should you so desire. Although gliding is useful there, it’s not required to gather XP. Also, I think, there may be some easy-to-acquire Mastery Points there.
Bloodstone Fen, on the other hand, requires gliding (as you begin on the ship), unless you use Teleport to a Friend, but that map is more gliding-centric.
Good luck.
