Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.
– Unknown Fire Elementalist
My main character is an elementalist. The “sorcerer” or “wizard” of Guild Wars 2. Yet I am unable to find a satisfactory LIGHT SOURCE for her. Oh, I don’t need it very often; mostly for the occasional foray into the Sharkmaw Caverns jumping puzzle. But for the foremost spellcasters in the game, this oversight is shocking.
I have assigned my one-and-only “Flames of Kryta” torch to her for this purpose, but it is woefully dim.
I have hunted through the Staves, Scepters, Foci, and Daggers, but have not come up with anything that sheds a nice light (or skill granted from the item in question).
Any thoughts, anyone? (And please, by the six gods, let the answer not be a “Legendary” weapon!)
I don’t use a light going through the jp. Just use any aoe green circle and move it over the ground. It shows the different terrain levels and have never had a problem.
Staff Fire #2 usually does the trick for me, and spamming #1 when #2 is on cooldown. xD Air #5 and Water #2 work nicely too.
Yeah, I’ve tried using my targeting circles and it helps a little. But I’m not the world’s best jumper, and light makes all the difference. (My Mesmer gets through easily with the bright blue-white light of Cobalt).
I am primarily a staff Elementalist, and have tried all of the skills to try to get a little light on the subject. But it’s slow and tricky that way.
Still looking for something that puts out good light on a continual basis. I will see if I can get the EFFIGY FRAGMENT sold by Grathzion the Dauntless in Fireheart Rise, and test it out. But pictures of it in action don’t look any brighter than the Flames of Kryta.
This works especially well if you use the trait Blasting Staff:
First of all, turn off “fast cast area of effect spells”, and act like you’re going to cast water #5, healing rain (the radius is even larger if you have the above trait on), but just hover the green targeting circle around and don’t cast it.
Now, put the circle just in front of your feet so that it’s nearly centered around you, and right-click-&-hold, to turn your camera while you’re going through the puzzle. Or, right click to aim your camera and press #5 just once to activate the targeting circle, continuing to hold the right click. Bingo, the ground lights up green and you can see any nearby ledges that are close enough to jump to.
I would suggest you use both this and the flames of kryta, but it would replace your weapon skills. This works much better on a profession that has a large AoE circle on a utility or elite slot (like mesmer’s Time Warp, is king of jp’s), but, alas, this isn’t the case with Ele.

GLYPH OF STORMS has a semi-decent sized target circle, so I could use that in conjunction with the Flames of Kryta.
But my problem remains… something that sheds actual, continuous LIGHT is still far better for me than the targeting circles, as well as requiring less dexterity out of a poor jumper such as myself. I can live with the dimmer, yellowish light from a fire (although the brighter blue-white of Cobalt is nicer). But the Flames of Kryta doesn’t have a very big light radius, so won’t always illuminate as far as I am able to jump.
The search goes on…
When I do Sharkmaw without a light source, I simply wait for the ghost to illuminate the area, take quick note of my next jump, and leap to it. It helps that I’ve done the puzzle enough times to only need a reminder. If I’m facing the wrong way and lose the light before the jump, I wait for the next flash. It’s slow, but it works.
If you feel really cheap, you can also adjust the value of the Full-Screen Gamma in the settings to see in the dark.

Conjure Fiery Greatsword according to this list would probably be your best best, I logged in just to sugest emberglow but apparently that wont work.

Drat! I thought that would be a winner. But to tell the truth I’m not even sure it illuminates my hands as I hold it. It probably needs to be off that list. The Fiery Greatsword is bright, I’ll give you that. But it doesn’t seem to light up anything else around it.
Now, if you were around for the first Halloween event, there is this really nice burning book backslot-item… (I always have it with me for these situations XD)
I was around. Didn’t really care for the giant book on my back, so never bothered to improve it beyond the initial non-burning look. Long gone now. Does it actually give off light? I didn’t know any armor pieces did that, although plenty are “burning”.
Yes, I used the burning book backpiece as my Sharkmaw light source for a long time. Just had to swap to it, or if it was my statted piece, toggle it on to visibility. It only lights things up for you, so no one else can tell it’s doing that.
I sort of miss the torches in DaoC RvR, where you could see to run around but you were a visibly moving pool of light when you used them. (They weren’t weapons, just a toggleable light source).
If Cobalt works well, try the Ghastly weapon skins from Ascalon Catacombs. At night, they glow blue and might give off enough light similar to Cobalt. Don’t have one myself so I can’t confirm.
Does The Anomaly create light? It seems like it would but I don’t actually have it
Why isn’t the flames of kryta enough? You can see the edge of the next platform when you’re standing on the edge of the previous one. How much more help you need?
If you use D/D, then Corrupted Shard may be a good option since it glows quite a bit. Here’s a screenshot of someone weilding one (it’s not lit up when sheathed).
If you feel really cheap, you can also adjust the value of the Full-Screen Gamma in the settings to see in the dark.
As this guy said, adjusting the gamma down to about 20-25 (hmm maybe that’s the default, might have even been zero-ish) if I remember correctly is a VERY GOOD option. When I did this JP I could see EVERYTHING.
If you have it tucked away in your bank somewhere, Mad Memoires (orange fire version) from the Halloween event lights up an area really well, but it is a backpiece. I used to have to use it a lot due to a combination of poor vision and a dim monitor.

Most of the time I CAN’T see the edge of the next one with the Flames of Kryta. Like I said, it is pretty dim as light sources go. And I tried turning up my gamma. That helps for the puzzle in general, but not in the pitch dark.
You could have a better video card. You almost certainly have better (younger) eyes. Mine worked nicely back when the epitome of video gaming was PONG. (Yes, I’m that old!)
I acquired the EFFIGY FRAGMENT:
http://dulfy.net/2013/01/16/gw2-useful-and-fun-consumables-guide/
It seems MARGINALLY better than the flames of Kryta, but I could be deluding myself. (See samples below. Neither one reveals the next ledge. If I ease up to where I am about to fall off, I occasionally swing the light around enough to glimpse it.)
Gamma here is normal (1.00). Gamma adjustment doesn’t pierce the pitch black on my computer. It lightens places as long as there is already some light, but does nothing when the Cap’n plays his evil tricks.
Have you tried Jezza’s Flamethrower?
The flamethrower auto attack on engineer lights up areas very well so perhaps the auto attack on this consumable flamethrower would be the same.
I just use the targeting circle for Meteor Shower for that JP.

Just tried it out and the flamethrower works just like the real one.
You may also get lucky and an friendly engineer may spam one for you for free.
I use Jormag’s Breath as a light source. Plus, it looks awesome, especially the blue glow. But… ele can’t use.
Anomaly does not illuminate.

LOL, that is what I did. Kinda cheap but it works.

I think you have the winner, Ronin!
Until they come up with a brighter light source I can use that is continual, I will be able to use Jezza’s Flamethrower. It doesn’t spread the light out in a big radius, but it does get the light far enough out into the distance that I can see my landing spot.
Thanks to Ronin and everyone for their ideas! If you come up with anything else, please illuminate me!
