Hi.

I tried a mesmer and i was getting pretty irritated at it, i heard its a blast once you hit 40… but the chances of me even hitting 40 on a character is slim… but on the chance i do get to 80…

Whats a good / fun character to play that will be useful at 80 if i were to ever hit that mark?

I tried Necro also and it seems fun, but i heard they are bugged and at 80 they are really not all that good at PvP, or anything really they are just “medicore”

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It really is all quite subjective. One person will love a profession another hates.

Still, I’ll recommend Guardian, at least for PvE. Mine is so fun she became my second 80, and that after pre-Beta avowals by me that I’d never play that boring paladin class. With her I can take so darn much. I heal up to full with a fast cast heal, I have shields and wards and blocks, I have support out the wazoo to help my team mates, and the different weapons give a highly different combat style as you swap.

For PvP, I don’t know. I’ll do WvW now and then but it’s far from being anything like a focus. I usually do it on my Thief, not to instagib people (I think that’s a myth, certainly I must suck at Thief if instagibbing is possible because he does so little damage), but to be able to run away at need. I am muuuuch more comfy in PvP if I don’t have to stay in it!

Warrior. Always wanted, straight up play style, easy leveling, and IMO fun (some say it’s boring). Guardian too, same as warr, not as much damage (close tho). Ranger easy to level but not wanted like the other 2.

You don’t have to worry about player biases when if comes to your profession choice. Trust me when I say that you can do well with any profession and shine in groups.

I will tell you that Engineer, and Mesmer are the 2 professions that really crawl along at earlier levels. The professions that really blast out of the gate with a lot of power early are Warriors with their high raw damage and cleaving, Guardians with their regen and cleaving, Rangers with their pets and power weapon sets, and Elementalists with their AoE. The easiest professions to start with are the ones that can easily handle multiple enemies early on, and Necro, Thief, Engineer, and Mesmer all lack this a bit more than the other 4 early on.

I suggest to not be daunted by that, and to try each profession in the PvP lobby, the mists to see which profession you enjoy most, but if you don’t feel like doing that, I suggest going for Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist, or Ranger first.

Necros are fine in PvP btw, and I’ve heard nothing about a bug. In sPvP you’re automatically raised to level 80 and given everything to pvp with, so all PvP is at level 80, so I don’t know what you mean when you say “at 80 they are really not all that good at PvP”.

I’ve had “good/fun” leveling the following professions to 80:
Ranger – not overly challenging, the pets can be a pain at times
Guardian – the easiest so far, was bringing down groups two levels above while leveling
Elementalist – was probably the longest to hit 80 (second character created but forth to hit 80), got frustrated in mid-levels until I tried a D/D skill-set
Necromancer – never got bored or frustrated with it

Currently leveling a warrior.
