Q:

Its been a while and there was a sale on HoT, so of course I dove back in. I’ve got a Reaper main now, in the stead of my old condition-well machine of a Necro. There’s also a hunter I had temporarily made my main during earlier Living World stuff, plus some Warrior I’ve hardly touched beyond getting to max level and making pretty. Sometimes I level my Mesmer but eh, I’ll get around to it.

Now naturally the Revenant’s interesting on the surface, along with it being the shiny new class. I’m not a fan of the Engineer or uh… whatever the Spy is—-by the gods do I never care for the sneaky types. The Guardian’s caught my eye though, as I’ve only played around a bit with mine its felt rather natural. Given that I just got my hands on HoT, I got this nifty lv80 thing and I’m split on whether I should use it on the trusty old Guardian or this fancy new Revenant.

tl;dr – Having mostly played ranged classes, aside from recently adopting the whole HoT Reaper-Necro thing, should I automatically level a Revenant or Guardian to 80?

Guardian – your defensive specialist, not saying healer but with Aegis, reflects, protection, and a splash of healing, they can be a very nice addition to any group in PVE. They aren’t meta for raids because additional unnecessary defenses are dropped, that’s the point of meta, but for pugs a hammer swinging perma protection giving, Aegis granting guardian is very nice. You will get some hate in fractals for people who are afraid of retaliation being stolen, but it doesn’t happen very often if people play half decently (don’t blast a light field, don’t just facetank damage, and boon strip if you have it and need it).

For WvW you’re the staple of the frontline, in fact there really is no frontline without a guard (ok you can come up with something, but really…). Convert the enemy into bags with your loot stick and keep the stability going. You can also roam quite effectively with meditation builds and DH just makes that stronger.

Rev- meta in raid comps simply by pressing F2, you can get more complicated than that but you don’t need to for your spot. Additionally you should be providing fury, some might, and protection as needed and then using your secondary legend for various tasks be it more damage, some kind of condi thing, or projectile defense/sustain.

WvW you’re another meta profession for the zerg, share resistance, pop wells, do fantastic damage, just an all around nice profession to have around. That’s about all I know though as I haven’t done rev myself in WvW.

Yeah but that can’t replace the opinion of somebody who knows these classes. That’s all I’m looking for, a nudge by expertise.

Revenant and Guardian both have their places in all game modes if I’m not mistaken (and I may very well be). If you had more specific questions I (and hopefully others) would be glad to answer them, but if your question is simply “Guard or Rev?” then I’m going to stand by my original response.

It seems like you can casually pummel your way through leveling as a Guardian, so I’m going to just go ahead and boost the Revenant to 80. Plus yeah, I’ve seen these kittens everywhere and hear they play every role and bingo with your grandmother on the weekends. Seems pretty straight forward actually.
