Hello everyone,

I’m in love with Guardians and I’m going to play this class until the day GW2 dies. I’ve noticed that a lot of us (by which I mean players in general, and also players of the Guardian class) tend to equate the Guardian with old paladin-type classes, and therefore resort automatically to old, deeply ingrained habits of whipping out the Hammer/Greatsword and blowing your cooldowns.

In my experience, this may be a satisfying way to play, but discourages experimentation. The following build depends less on raw damage from weapons and instead mixes solid group support with dependable and readily available burn damage, compatible with nearly ANY weapon:

The Bare Minimum

  • 15 Radiance – Justice is Blind (5), Blind Exposure (VI), Renewed Justice (10)
  • 5 Virtues – Inspired Virtues (5)

What it does:

Activating Virtue of Justice now blinds all nearby enemies and applies vulnerability to them. Furthermore, all nearby allies gain 5 seconds of stacking Burn on their next attack, as well as five seconds of 3-stack might. And this is the kicker: Virtue of Justice will instantly recharge every time an enemy you’re attacking dies, regardless of who delivers the killing blow.

In solo play, this means Virtue of Justice is going to be up with just about every single encounter. Several times if you fight several enemies—activate justice, kill an enemy, activate justice, kill an enemy with low health, activate justice, kill another enemy with low health, etc.

In group play, this means constantly refreshing and stacking Virtue of Justice every single time an enemy dies. In random events, when swarms of enemies attack your allies, you’ll be providing an endless stream of Might, Burn, Blind and Vulnerability.

This build is less effective on Champion fights, but hardly wasted. Many champion fights include low-health enemies that can be killed to recharge Virtue of Justice as well.

From here, you can build as you like! This is a flexible, low-cost build that delivers a lot for 20 Trait points. If you’re into dealing damage and spreading burn, then you’ll want Radiance anyway. Where do you go from here? A few directions to consider:

  1. Move toward 30 Radiance for Right-Handed strength.
  2. Pick up Zeal for additional condition duration, more burns and Spirit Weapon support. Push toward 30 for Greatsword support.
  3. Pick up Honor to synergize your high crit ratings into mobility, or combine 20% 2H recharge with the Greatsword traits of Zeal.
  4. Improve your Aegis and defense through Valor.
  5. Push 25-30 Virtues for added support, better burns and more damage.

Here is the direction I went:

Build Available Here

30 Radiance – Precision and Condition Damage bonus. Justice is Blind (5), Blind Exposure (VI), Signet Mastery (II – used primarily for Signet of Resolve), Radiant Power (25), Right Handed Strength (XI)

10 Valor – Valorous Defense (5), Meditation Mastery (I)

20 Honor – Vigorous Precision (5), Superior Aria (II), Selfless Daring (15), Empowering Might (VIII)

10 Virtues – Inspired Virtues (5), Master of Consecrations (VI)

Master of Consecrations, Meditation Mastery, Superior Aria and Signet Mastery are flexible depending on Support skills.

Explanation

This build focuses on maximizing my options and emphasizing versatility. In a game like GW2, versatility is—in my opinion—stronger and more dependable than pure specialization, in general. Because this is not a game about raw numbers and pure damage output, healing output or mitigation, the strength of a profession is in its capacity to adapt to situations.

The cornerstone of my build is Right Handed Strength, which gives me +15% crit with one handed weapons. I wanted a spec that accommodates every 1H weapon and allows for different playstyles, but emphasizes steady, dependable damage and strong—often passive—group support. The build revolves around the following principles:

  1. Effective damage output from one-handed weapons, primarily through a high crit percentage.
  2. Crit-synergy, providing bonuses for myself and my team tied into my crits.
  3. Readily available Virtue of Justice, improved through traits.
  4. Resilience and general survivability
  5. Versatile Support options

Here’s how I addressed the aforementioned goals:

Right-handed Strength accounts for a solid damage boost. A flat 15% crit is valuable, and coupled with Virtue of Justice, should account for a solid—though not excessive—rate of damage. If you want more damage, I’d recommend taking Fiery Wrath (Zeal II) and/or Power of the Virtuous (Virtues 25), and switch out Signet Mastery for Radiant Fire or Powerful Blades.

Crits grant 1 second of vigor and apply 5s of Might to all nearby allies. Crits therefore have a strategic benefit—along with providing higher spikes of base damage, Vigor helps me stay mobile, and Might accounts for additional damage and effects to my allies.

Virtue of Justice remains available after the death of any enemy. This accounts for a huge amount of damage via group Burning, as well as cascading Might buffs (killing several enemies in succession allows for several Justice activations, which stack Might).

Valorous Defense and Pure of Heart provides strong survivability by making good use of Aegis. Additionally, deep investment in the Honor line offers several options for improved healing. Writ of the Merciful and Writ of Exaltation provides strong and consistent group support when wielding a mace instead of a sword.

Barring Symbols, this build provides cooldown reduction and enlarged areas for just about every Guardian skill type—symbols, signets, shouts, meditations and consecrations.

This is a versatile, malleable build, capable of covering several roles and situations effectively. It isn’t highly specialized, but does depend on a solid 1H weapon and high crit. Consider the following variations:

  • Invest deeper into Zeal at the cost of Valor or Virtues, providing for improved damage through Power, Condition Duration, Fiery Wrath (Zeal II) and improved Spirit Weapon Support.
  • Invest deeper into Virtues for better Consecrations and Power of the Virtuous (Virtues 25).
  • Push 30 Honor for Pure of Voice or Battle Presence, emphasizing melee crits as well as support by shouts or area Resolve.

A General Note On Builds

Please remember that your traits are not permanent. They can and should be changed on the fly to suit your situation. The same applies to your Heal, Elite and Support skills. Many of us have come from other MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft where builds were static, respecs were punitive, and you were defined by your talent spec rather than your profession. Remember, you are NOT defined by your traits. You are defined by your profession, and your build is defined by your POTENTIAL traits.

Therefore, one of the subtle benefits of a wide, versatile build is access to a wide, versatile array of traits, all of which can be arranged within seconds. This build can reduce the cooldown of nearly every Guardian skill; it can vastly improve survivability through Pure of Heart and Valorous Defense, improve passive group support through Empowering Might and Strength in Numbers, provide for dependable and sturdy Revive, or spread Burn like crazy.

This build is capable of doing all of that, because it has access to all of the aforementioned Traits. If you prepare your Traits in accordance with your situation, you can be ready for anything.

I hope you all give my build a try, but I also encourage you to go out and experiment. Try new weapons, new traits and new combinations of abilities. And please, do offer any constructive criticism or thoughts you might have on this build or any other.

If you have any favorite builds of your own, please feel free to post them below.

Such a good format and time taken to do it ill just use it. This one requires a little more to get it going.

The Bare Minimum

10 Valor – Valorous Defense (5), Purity (V)
20 Honor – Vigorous Precision (5), Superior Arie (II), Selfless Daring (10), Writ of the Merciful (X)
20 Virtues – Inspired Virtues (5), Retaliatory Subconscious (IV), Virtue of Retribution (10), Absolute Resolution (IX)

What it does:

This focuses around improving the boons and defensive virtues.

In solo play, this means Virtue of Resolve and Virtue of Courage are going to be more of a passive thing instead of a something you use a lot of. Use the shouts and only the virtues if you have nothing else left.

In group play, your play will change and you will want to use Virtue of Courage on telegraphed attacks to provide aoe block. Use Virtue of Resolve if the entire group needs a quick hp boost. Otherwise once again use your shouts to negate damage and keep boons up.

This build on Champion fights works exactly like it does in group play.

From here, you can build as you like! Its always your choice. I personally went with this build.

Build Found Here

This build focuses on aoe group regen and instant cast aegis to avoid one shot hits. With the weapon set seen here it is possible to keep at max hitpoints 75% to 85% of the time. With the greatsword your able to pull most mobs to you to somewhat control agro. For those that you can there is a quick recast teleport on the Sword and Board set as well as a channeled ranged attack that grants aegis while its channeling.

The build revolves around the following principles:

Maintaining group regen from multiple sources.
Transferring conditions from team mates.
Removing conditions from my self.
Canceling out the One Shot Kill moves with Aegis.
Mobility.
Damage Reduction.
General agro control.
Damage reflection.

Here’s how I addressed the aforementioned goals:

(Maintaining group regen from multiple sources) – Symbol of Wrath, Hold the Line, Virtue of Resolve

(Transferring conditions from team mates) – Save Yourselves

(Removing conditions from my self) – Purity, Virtue of Resolve

(Canceling out the One Shot Kill moves with Aegis) – Virtue of Courage, Retreat, Shelter, Zealot’s Defense

(Mobility) – Retreat, Save Yourselves, Flashing Blade

(Damage Reduction) – Shield of Judgement, Hold the Line, Virtue of Courage

(General agro control) – Binding Blade

(Damage reflection) – Symbol of Wrath, Retaliatory Subconscious, Virtue of Retribution

While this build may not do tons of damage its got staying power. Not only for its self but for its allies as well. Hope you all like it.

You Sir (or Madame ) are awesome!
first of, thanks for the good layout and easy read, second thanks for your insights into the guardian.
i play a guardian myself, though i have to confess that i fall into the paladin-esque playstyle which you mention.
as soon as i meet the minimum requirements (read level 25) i will try this build as it reads like a fun and versatile build.
thanks alot for sharing this.

This is a really solid build. If you’re going Sword/Shield and Greatsword as your two weapons, you might want to consider Two Handed Mastery + Writ of the Merciful as well. Although Superior Aria is definitely worth it with Hold the Line and Save Yourself.

I like that Purity has some good synergy with Save Yourselves. Having 20 in Valor is a pretty smart move, too, if you feel like doubling up the benefit of Shelter. Shelter heals less than Signet of Resolve, but recharges significantly faster and gives you two seconds of block—which, frankly, is amazing when used right. Defender’s Flame (Valor II) has some great synergy with Shelter. Use Shelter when you’re being attacked, and you’ll block attacks, heal yourself and set your enemies on fire.

I like this build, and if I weren’t in love with Right Hand Strength, I’d use something similar. The only bit of real criticism I can offer is that Retributive Armor doesn’t do much for you unless you’re really stacking up on Toughness. The build doesn’t seem to capitalize on Crit much, so Defender’s Shield and Strength in Numbers might actually give you a bit more mileage. You could even take Meditation Mastery and Contemplation of Purity for a powerful “condition eater” build. (Save Yourselves! + Contemplation of Purity = Your nearby allies lose all conditions, and you turn those conditions into boons for yourself.)

Do “Strength in Numbers” actually work? I don’t see any +30 toughness boon on players nearby. Also, I asked a friend to check his Hero Panel and it doesn’t seem to show the +30 bonus. He had a measly +15 which probably had a different source.

If we’re not seeing a +30 toughness boost to nearby allies, then it’s a bug and needs to be reported that way. I’ll do some tests later today and try to figure it out.

Something else I want to know:

Do Valorous Defense (Valor 5) or Pure of Heart (Honor 10) have internal cooldowns? The reason I’m asking is that Valorous Defense pops an Aegis whenever your health hits 50%, and Pure of Heart heals you whenever you lose Aegis.

So, potentially, it should be possible to be dropped to about 50% health, get Aegis, lose Aegis on the next attack and be pushed above 50%, then drop below 50% again and get Aegis a second time. In fact, if you’re fighting an enemy that delivers several quick strikes in succession, and you happen to be around ~50% health, you could potentially refresh Aegis indefinitely.

Can anyone confirm this? If not, I’ll try it later tonight.

Currently I’ve not noticed any cool down on Valorous Defense (Valor 5). With my regen i’ve set on some fights bouncing between 48% and 51% hp with aegis up almost all the time. Sadly i havent had the chance to test the other out so no clue there but as it sets i dont beleave it does eather as our skills that do have a timer on the state such. Although at times i’ve noticed my hp just over the 50% marker and ill just say it seems sometimes Valorous Defense (Valor 5) doesent trigger. Dont know if it was a bug on my par as ill jump from 85% to like 40% and get no aegis. I know that it hasent triggered in some time because i have massive regen and dont drop hp that fast unless im hit by a lot of stuff all at once. Will say though that i’ve though of building into these two and dropping my Retreat skill for the Contemplation of purity skill as to me retreat is nice but boons are nicer at times.

The Masteries are flexible. I included them in order to accommodate some meditations I might use. My loadout is never static. I always change my Support skills to adapt to the anticipated situation, and if I’m using Meditations, then the Mastery is useful.

Otherwise, I’m better off taking Purity or Defender’s Flame.

Thank you, Eveningstar, for posting this. I have been searching for a build that provides the versatility that yours offers. I chose the Guardian because it has the potential for great versatility. However, until now, I’ve only found builds that emphasize only one or two aspects of a Guardian’s capabilities. Your build seems to be just what I’ve been looking for. And it was presented in a thoroughly explained, easy to understand manner.

I’m very happy to help! I do want to warn that this build is far from perfect, and does have some significant weaknesses—the most prominent of which is vulnerability to condition removal. It doesn’t happen in general PVE, but in PVP, if your enemies are stripping conditions off themselves, this build does lose some efficacy.

Now, Virtue of Justice, with this build, provides some extra conditions too—vulnerability and blind, which may serve to “cover” the Burn, but you want to be aware of the weaknesses.

Furthermore, the build is weapon dependent. It was designed with sword in mind, but if you switch to scepter or mace, you may have to toggle out one or two Traits (bigger symbols and symbols that heal you, for example, are much more useful on a Mace).

Updated my post to add another variation.

If you want, you can push 15 Radiance and 25-30 Virtues. Virtues seems to be a popular line, and it does a few things for this build:

  • Virtue of Retribution: Gives Retaliation whenever you activate a Virtue. Frequent Virtue of Justice use means free and frequent Retaliation.
  • Power of the Virtuous: Deal damage for each boon you have. This is potentially BIG. I don’t know how much extra damage each boon gives, but Virtue of Justice alone will give you Might and Retaliation (from Virtue of Retribution). You can pick up Vigor as well from 5 Honor. That’s three boons you’ll always have with you, right off the bat, which is to say nothing of Aegis or Protection.

Some caveats to consider:

  1. 15 Radiance operates by instantly refreshing Virtue of Justice. The Virtues line, on the other hand, reduces the recharge on Virtues by a flat percentage. You can’t have it both ways. If you’re killing enemies frequently, than the recharge reduction on Virtue of Justice provided by the Virtues line is going to be wasted.
  2. However, one of the weaknesses of 15 Radiance is that it doesn’t do much against enemies that don’t die quickly—like bosses. In this case, you’ll get much more mileage out of the Virtue line. In this case, you could see it as Radiance 15 covering you for general PVE and swarms of smaller enemies, while Virtues 25 covers you for bosses and champions.
  3. Supreme Justice isn’t going to do much for you here. It’s a fantastic trait—but only if you aren’t activating Virtue of Justice. Which, if you follow this build, you are. It can come in handy in certain situations, but for the most part, it’s not very compatible with this build.
  4. Permeating Wrath might be amazing or might not work well with this build—I’m not sure, because the tooltip is unclear. If Permeating Wrath only applies to passive Virtue of Justice, you won’t see much benefit from it. If, however, it applies to active Virtue of Justice, you’re going to see a lot more burned enemies, which is always wonderful!
  5. If you take 25 Virtues, I recommend going at least 10 Zeal for Fiery Wrath. 10% bonus against enemies is pretty much a guarantee. Combine that with Power of the Virtuous, and you should expect to see some very high damage.

So, here’s a variation on my build which emphasizes damage at the cost of defense and some support:

10 Zeal – Fiery Wrath
25 Radiance – Deal more damage to enemies afflicted by conditions
5 Honor – Gain Vigor when you crit
25 Virtues – Deal extra damage for each boon you have on you.

That leaves you with five points to spend where you like. You can push 30 Radiance for Right-Hand Strength, 30 Virtues for Permeating Wrath, or even Honor or Valor for a bit of support. But in a nutshell, this variation gets you:

+10% Damage on Burning enemies
+Damage on enemies suffering from conditions
+Damage for every boon you have (with Might, Vigor and Retaliation guaranteed)
+5% Sword damage
+15% Crit with one handed weapons
+Vigor every time you crit
+Frequent use of Virtue of Justice, either from reaping dead enemies or on Champions using the recharge bonus.

This is much more damage oriented than my prior build, but effective. Give me your thoughts?

A bump for exposure, and also some new data.

I’ve been digging around a bit, and it turns out that Power of the Virtuous grants +2% damage per boon on you.

With Might, Vigor and Aegis commonly on you, that’s about a constant damage bonus of 2% to 6%. If you use Save Yourselves, it’s +14%.

Might gives +35 power at level 80. If you take Empowering Might (Honor VIII) and use a fast weapon (1H Sword), expect 2-3 stacks of Might to be up constantly. Push to about 4-5 if you’re attacking multiple enemies consistently.

This means that Empowering Might is comparable to Power of the Virtuous with a fast weapon, but Power of the Virtuous turns Save Yourselves! into a monstrous damage boost.

However, in a party of 3-5 teammates, or when in an event/PVP situation where you have several allies near you, the cumulative benefit of Empowering Might will quickly outpace the damage you personally deal from Power of the Virtuous.

A little rundown:

If you’re going for pure damage, you’ll want to consider….

Zeal

II: Fiery Wrath – Increased damage by 10% against burning enemies. If you have a high refresh rate on Virtue of Justice, this should be nearly every fight.

VII: Greatsword Power – Greatsword damage increased by 5%

Radiance

15: Renewed Justice – Virtue of Justice is renewed when you kill a foe. Very useful in general PVE. Against targets that stay alive longer (Vet/Champs and PVP), going deep Virtues might be better for Justice cooldown reduction.

25: Radiant Power – Increased damage against foes with conditions. Very useful. Don’t quote me on this, but I think I recall the damage bonus being 10-15%. Conditions are a constant.

X: Powerful Blades – Sword and Spear damage increased by 5%. Useful if you’re going for a high-damage sword build that capitalizes on crits, fast attacks and Zealot’s Blade.

XI: Right Hand Strength – Flat +15% crit with 1h weapons. Useful for sword builds.

Virtues

25: Power of the Virtuous – See above. High personal damage boost, especially with Save Yourselves.

I: Unscathed Contender – 10% more damage with Aegis.

So if you’re stacking damage buffs, you’ll want to add up…

Zeal II, Radiance VI, X and XI, Virtues I and VIII. For a total of…

10% against burning, 5% with swords, 10% against conditions, 4-8% from Power of the Virtuous. So that’s about, say, 30% more damage. Another 10% if Aegis is up. 10% more if you use “Save Yourselves!” Suffice to say, that is a LOT of damage! You just won’t have much support beyond the basics.

Oh, and this is before the flat +15% crit. I might even try this build.

But, if you want something more balanced, with robust party support and good survivability, while also dishing out solid, sustained damage, try what I’m running right now:

0/30/5/30/5.

Take Empowering Might and Battle Presence in Honor. This is significantly less personal damage than the damage-stacking build I just linked, but it keeps about 2-4 stacks of might, at least, on every nearby ally all the time. Plus all nearby allies regenerate about 100-120 health per second—not amazing, but it adds up. This is in addition to the extra support options Honor gives (good dodge mobility, better symbols and shouts, more health).

Ok so i had a chance to test those two skill’s out. Dident notice any cool down then again i have so much healing rolling havent dropped below 95% hp since i changed it.

Ok a further update on this. I was finally able to get this to work. At 49% it poped aegis and then shortly after healed me up to 51%. I was promptly lowered to 45% and aegis popped again. And once more was healed. But this time it only brought me up to 47 or 48%. So while this does have the potential to be some massive healing. I personally found the symbol’s heal to be a better heal. You have to hit that sweet spot of 47 to 49% to effectively use these skill’s togeather as the heal from aegis being used isent over all that large. But was a nice find.

You’re right that the healing itself isn’t that amazing, and it does require hitting a sweet spot.

What I’m more interested in though is the double Aegis. Remember that Aegis will stop any attack, if it does 5 damage or 5,000. If I get knocked down to 48%, Aegis pops, and I take a hit, and go up to 51%, Aegis is going to pop again and save me twice. In terms of mitigation, that’s potentially a lot.

There are also some Traits that capitalize on having Aegis. One that gives you 10% more damage with Aegis, and one that burns enemies every time you block, and a few more. Gonna look into this a bit more.

Thanks!

There are also some Traits that capitalize on having Aegis. One that gives you 10% more damage with Aegis, and one that burns enemies every time you block, and a few more. Gonna look into this a bit more.

Thanks!

No problem. And as for poping aegis does anyone know if Courageous Return refreshes aegis or just the cooldown on a used Virtue of Courage. Also does it work if your not downed as a rally is when you kill a mob but tends to only show when your downed.

SiNoS: Courageous Return doesn’t refresh Aegis. Aegis is a one-shot boon that disappears when it’s used up; Courageous Return refreshes the cooldown on Virtue of Courage in the same way 15 Radiance refreshes the cooldown on Virtue of Justice.

It activates when you rally while downed, for any reason. I think it also activates if you’re resurrected the hard way.
