I usually roll my eyes at these posts but here I am. I was wondering if someone could help me pick a class. The things I want in one are: good at www small group or solo, good at spvp, NOT SQUISHY, and is a overall fun class. I would prefer not guardian or warrior but if you think it is a perfect match, I might consider it.

Need more details than that. Describe your playstyle, not the mode you want to play, since the only substantive thing you gave us is “not squishy” and then proceeded to eliminate the two least squishy classes.

I like fast paced and ranged attacks. Out of all the ones I have tried, it has been the closest but I haven’t tried ranger or necro

You might want to try necro. They have high HP and play from range. Apparently some bad things happened to them last patch though so maybe someone who’s recently played one can give better info, but i use mine in wvw and i really have fun with it.

Fast paced ranged attacks? Ranger > Shortbow
Quite good in PvP, IF you know how to play with conditions. Don’t have experience with it in WvW, though, so I can’t tell… But it’s a bit squishy if I understand what that exactly means.
Necro, as ozmaniandevil suggested, is a good alternative: not fast as ranger, though (with the dagger being the fastest weapon, but with melee/600/600 range). It has, indeed, recently changed and in PvP has become weaker and hardly viable (for a lot of own debuffs and other’s buffs that I’m not going to discuss here). Necros in WvW are quite useful, imo, expecially when dropping unblockable marks and wells in a gate-bursting crowd ^^)
As for the requisite of “having fun”, well, that is only up to you and can honestly happen with every profession and every build.
Best regards

Thanks. I am probably gonna go for the ranger. But anymore opinions would be much appreciated!

Fast paced and ranged? Something tanky? It really sounds like the ranger is for you! We bunker really well, and our power builds are now starting to see the light of day with some recent buffs.
Stay away from the Ranger forums. They’re a bunch of doomsayers.

The only problems with rangers are their pet AI, which only occurs when you use your pet for 100% damage. Their traitlines which locks you into a specific line. E.g. if you run traps, you always need the double duration trait for them otherwise they suck.
Lastly some utility skills. Sigils have high cooldowns and less value when compared to other classes’s sigils. Spirits are still love or hate.

The bunker spec is only good because all the others were worse. It’s based on outlasting your opponent. As Axyl said, other specs are starting to emerge.

Let me start out by saying that rangers are a fun class, and ranger is currently my sPVP main. Every class has its strengths and weaknesses and excels at certain tasks or game modes.

WvW isn’t the best place for a ranger unless you are roaming or with a small havoc group then they can be great. But if you join any organized group most of them will ask for you to re-roll something different. Like the poster above me mentioned, the major drawback is the terrible AI with pets, and also the mechanics for a ranger are not meant for large scale battles. If you are running in a GvG group or a zerg and your pet dies in the 1st push or chases after someone who knows where there goes a huge % of your DPS ( and might even prevent you from using some utilities EX: shouts). Before anyone starts flaming at the comment above, I’m not saying it’s impossible to run a ranger in a large scale battle, but rather that it can be done a lot more efficiently with a lot less effort with other classes.

Necromancers bring a lot of utility to the table when it comes to WvW, regardless if you are doing small scale battles or large. The boonstrip they bring to a zerg is priceless. And even though they are a light armor class they have a 2nd health bar to make up for the squish. Playing a necromancer effectively may require you to place a lot of ground target skills (marks, wells ) so if you decide to play one make sure you are either comfortable with them, or are willing to learn.

Taking out 2 most squishy classes (Elementalist and Mesmer) and Warrior and Guardian that only leaves you with the Thief and Engineer. I don’t play an Engineer so I will not comment on one here, but rather focus on thieves as well. Thieves much like rangers are one of the classes that is somewhat situational. Thieves are great scouts and are very mobile. They are fairly squishy but due to the stealth they can avoid a lot damage. They are great roamers and nice in small havoc groups as well, but are harder to play in larger battles.

I don’t know if you all have met our seen Abbadon’s combat guide, but he taught me a way to make my own build. I doubt I will try to go for a bunker build. Thanks for the opinions!
