Hello
Anyone has a spare trial / buddy key for the original GW1 game ?
I have a paid GW2 account and i wanted to try out the original game before purchasing the full game.
Or at least can someone tell me if these options are still available anymore.
Thank You

I don’t know about any trials, but it’s definitely worth the money. The complete 3 campaign + EotN pack is really cheap, so.. just give it a try

(If you want GW1 for GW2 achievements/rewards, it will cost quite some time. PM me if you want tips on how to get to 50 HoM points in a few months)

I don’t think you can get trial/buddy keys anymore.

Guild wars, and Guild wars2 are very different games. I really enjoy both, but I also know a lot of people who got GW1 to get the skins for GW2, while some liked the game play of GW1, most did not. I still enjoy playing GW1, But I understand people not liking it, because it’s not the same game play as GW2.

Keep an eye out for online specials — I see Trilogy (original + the Factions & Nightfall campaigns) and Platinum (original + Eye of the North expansion) on sale 2-3x/year.

Try to hold out of trilogy @US$25 or less and Platinum (or equivalent) for US$15 or less, but I think it would be worth $35-40 and $25 respectively if you don’t want to wait.

It’s a much older game and if you can live with that, you’ll easily get 50+ hours of gameplay in (and likely hundreds of hours). Here are the main issues you should be prepared for:

  • It’s not an MMO: combat only takes place in instances with typically 8 players and you can bring your own NPCs instead.
  • Combat is not dynamic: most skills root you in place until channeled.
  • The game is 2D: no jumping or gliding (even climbing stairs is closer to walking on a mobius strip than rising in elevation).
  • There’s virtually no support — your only resource will be online guides (the wiki is fantastic) and other players.
  • There’s no marketplace — you have to go into the one zone that everyone does P2P trading in and hope someone is selling/buying for the price you want. It can be really hard to get some of the stats you want.
  • There’s no wardrobe, so skin management means accepting the stats (and P2P trades).

Still, I think it’s a great game and many GW2 fans I know return to it a few times a month.
