For appearance, mesmer is the only scholar class to use a sword, and is probably the best visual representation of the archetype you will find.
In terms of skillset, the mesmer is a little lacking on the deathgates and lightning bolts, but the attacks are clearly magical in nature—I don’t think any one class combines magic and physical attacks as well as the mesmer, so it is probably your best bet, although not quite the ideal you’re hoping for.
Bonus: Carry on a conversation with your phantasms and illusions when they aren’t visible to everybody else.

In terms of WOT lore, there are probably 2 choices for profession.
1. Elementalist, for the Battle of Dumai’s Wells scene with the Asha’man using the rolling ring of earth and fire to destroy the Aiel. And Asha’man are traditional strong in earth and fire, 2 of the 4 elementalist attributes. Eles can use a dagger/focus combo (pretend the dagger is a mini-sword and the focus is an angreal).
2. Asha’man in the old tongue translates to guardian, and guardians can use swords. Though not too many Asha’man have actually had sword fight scenes, except for Rand.
Human would be the best choice since all the Asha’man were human. As for specific builds besides what is above, I would take a look at the different trait lines – I haven’t played enough with Elementalist or Guardian to be that familiar with those classes yet.
ETA: Cool thoughts on Asha’man mesmer by above poster!

Played a mesmer but wasn’t my thing exactly. Asha’man weren’t of illusions but of stone cold bad kitten direct magic out of the kitten And you’re right about the elementalist but the playstyle would require me to switch between elements like a madman, and as with the mesmer I ain’t so keen on twitch play/ micro managing etc.
I like the connection to Dumai’s Wells though, never occured to me that relates to the Ring of Earth and Fire.
I hope Anet releases some other classes next expansion, preferably a melee caster. Would be dope man.
Thanks for thinking with me!

I would say elementalist best fits the Asha’man in that the basis of the One Power is use of elements, and you find paralells in how the GW2 Elementalist uses elements: Water has healing, fire has damage, etc.
I would even go so far as to say that once you trait an elementalist, you have achieved being ‘strong’ in one form of power over another. Men were typically stronger in Earth and Fire, so you could trait an elementalist to Earth and Fire, understanding that your use of water for healing would be weaker.
Also, if you want to get to melee range, D/D ele is a pretty close range combatant.
Props to the poster above for mentioning guradian, the Magic + Weapon ability is really spot on, and the Virtues allow you to do several Asha’man like things. Also, the elite tomes from Guardian add significantly more casting feel to the class.
