The answer totally depends on how you play. I’ve been playing since the first day of pre-release and my main only just reached lvl 20 last night. My second highest is lvl 5. I just play REEEAAALLY slowly. And I like it that way.

I think there was at least one person who reached lvl 80 before the 3 days of pre-release were done. There are quite a few getting to 80 now. Nearly all did it through hard and long hours. It’s possible some leveled their characters in a way the devs will slow down in the future, if they think a certain activity levels you too fast.

Here is my personal breakdown:
The Fastest: I think you could get to 80 in 5 days if you took off work and peed in a jar.
The Slowest: Well, you can’t play must slower than me and I have one level 20 and one level 5 after 12 days, or about 2 levels a night, or about 40 days of play for one character to reach lvl 80.

The game is great. Just play it as you like.

Due to downscaling (probably the best idea in an MMO ever – GJ ANet!) Endgame could be playing lower level dungeons as well as level 80 zones. GW1 had a similar system, although not as refined. Its really going to depend on what you do at 80.

Oops read your post wrong. I played GW1 but it’s been so long I can’t remember. I know there was lots of stuff to keep me busy, but I didn’t start playing until some of the expansion were already out.

You can’t really compare the two, GW1 was VERY different from this game. Having played GW1 a lot I can tell you that there was always something to do and was very challenging, but again, it was a completely different style of game. It is pretty early in release to get a lot of information on end game content for GW2, main focus is not going to be on end game right now. Just enjoy the game at the pace you would like to. Based off of GW1, I can tell you that Anet is VERY good about giving you additional content within reasonable time and always having something exciting to do rather than “hitting the wall” at max level.

EDIT: There are currently 8 dungeons in GW2, but they can be played in multiple ways allowing for up to 32 different variations of the dungeons. With scaling, you should never run out of things to do, even right now

In GW2 there is a thing called dynamic events. Thats your end game. you get your first taste of it as you have created your first character.
Besides that, there are dungeons (5 people raid instances), WvW and PvP (5 vs 5)
Because of those dynamic events and the fact that you get down-graded to the zone/area level allows for the whole game to be “end game” like.
The only thing you wont find in the lvl 80 zones that you do in the low level zones are Hearts.
